ROUND 1 SUBMISSIONS HAVE CONCLUDED, ANONYMOUS AND SUBMITTER VOTING WILL RUN UNTIL MONDAY, MARCH 25TH @ MIDNIGHT CEST

PLEASE VOTE HERE TO DECIDE SCHEDULING FOR FUTURE /ck/ CHALLENGE ROUNDS http://poal.me/f4pyq0

Hello and thank you to all the challengers who submitted a dish for Round 1 of the 2019 /ck/ Challenge! This round's theme was RICE and so far I've seen some fantastic rice dishes on display here today…as well as some absolutely disgusting ones that I wouldn't even serve to my dog even if my dog looked like a loathsome Korean! But despite my love of rice I will not be deciding on who will rise to the top in this first battle in Kit/ck/hen Stadium. This is a challenge decided on by the people, so now it's time to let the people decide! Who will rise to the top in this first /ck/ Challenge!

For Rounds 1-3 of this year's competition we will be counting challenger (aka those who submitted a dish to the challenge) votes as the main deciding vote for the open arounds, however I encourage anons to still vote in case of any ties or special considerations for submitters who do very well with anon votes but not as well with submitter votes. Challengers will not be permitted to vote on their own dish. The best average scoring dish by a submitter will be considered for acceptance into the elimination rounds (Rounds 4 and up) so if you want to get a better score for the time of the final decision please consider submitting a dish for Rounds 2 and 3 to better your odds!

The voting will follow modified Iron Chef rules, a 20 point scale where 5 points each will go towards Presentation (how the dish looks on the plate, i.e. the plating), Originality, Appeal (how appetizing the dish looks to you) and fulfilling the Challenge Goals.

You may use this template in order to score the competitors submissions:

Presentation: /5
Originality: /5
Appeal: /5
Challenge Goals: /5
Total: /20

And now I will present each challengers dish for your voting considerations! Best of luck challengers!

Before I begin I would like to say that I respect anyone willing to put themselves and their creations on trial. It's not easy to have your work be judged by random people and because of that I felt you all deserved a brief explanation of my thought processes behind each score. I would like you all to know that I took my time considering all the entries and that I wrote my scores and reasons then sat on them overnight before rewriting and editing many of them upon a second consideration. I have obviously skipped my own entry.

Presentation is good, I like the use of visual depth and I'll give you props on the typography. Originality has to take a hit for being a somewhat common Japanese dish. Appeal is high, I would definitely eat this with enthusiasm. Gotta mark down on challenge goals just because the rice isn't up front and center. Feels more like the beef is the showcase item.

I had to mark down presentation a bit here. I would have liked to see more than one rice parcel and the lighting is off on the final photo. Originality suffers seeing as this meal has existed since before christ was born. Appeal is ok but it looks kind of greasy. I feel that the challenge goals are decently satisfied.

Great presentation with good lighting and a well thought out composition. Definitely not original. Appeal is high as this was the first entry that made me go "ya I'm going to make that". Gotta hit this one for presentation since the focus is way off to the point I can barely see the crepes. Originality i'll give top marks for trying to make something that should be impossible. Appeal is just ok since they look a little well done but I would like to try that orange sauce next time I'm making crepes. Challenge goals I feel aren't satisfied here. Props for being the one true "original" dish here though.

Presentation is ok, I like the contrasting of the orange carrots against the blue bowl but there's a lot of distractions in the photo that draw my attention away from the food. originality is ok, Risotto is obviously a very common dish but points for remixing it into a quasi stew. Appeal is meh for me as I think it looks cold and I'm not a fan of the plain piece of bread. I rather would have seen a heartier bread like a roll.

>>12073358

Presentation is ok with the chicken being nicely placed on top of the rice in a nice pattern rather than being thrown in randomly. I like the use of the bowl since the lime green contrasts nicely against the rice. Originality suffers greatly being such a common and well know dish. Appeal is great, the chicken looks juicy, the rice isn't overcooked and well seasoned. The challenge goals are spot on with the use of the lemon and cilantro garnish to help round out the color pallet and help add to the liveliness that the chairman was asking for.

Presentation is pretty meh since everything is pretty much the same color, focus is a bit off and the lighting seems like it's an incandescent bulb. Originality is ok and i'll give a little bump in score just because this looks a bit like a middle eastern/indian fusion with the inclusion of what we would call chicken cream chop. Appeal is actually quite high, i would enjoy eating this. Challenge goals are non existent since I can barely even see the rice which was kind of the entire challenge.

>>12073285 Beef Kao Pad
>Presentation: 3/5
The dish itself is a very vivid one, the greens contrast brightly with the caramelized browns. Looks crisp and makes it notice that it has great flavor. But it lacks overall shape, there is very little order with the elements and there is a general carelessness with placing, lone split grains on top of things like that one on the plate, random mounts of rice, etc.
>Originality: 3/5
A stir-fry was guaranteed to be in this round, choosing a Thai recipe is at least more original than Chinese or Japanese, at least for me who ives in a country where Thailand is almost never spoken of.
>Appeal: 5/5
I would eat spoonfuls of it, seems to be a very satisfying dish
>Challenge Goals: 3/5
Rice is an integral part of the dish, it can hardly be replaced with something else, but it acts like a cohesive element for the other ingredients, the dish is built around rice, but what makes it is greatly in part because of that around it, the rice itself has little care put to it.

>Presentation: 4.5/5
I can only point out nit-picks, it needs some readjustments before it can be served at a high-end restaurant, was your blade sharp enough?
>Originality: 4/5
I am only showing my ignorance, but I never knew that Kōji could be used for that, I also never tough of using crispy rice in soups. However, it still follows the paradigm of having Protein as the main part of the dish, but it is in part saved by the rubbing process, meaning that the theme for this round it is still present in some way
>Appeal: 5/5
I am a huge weeb, so this appeals to me greatly, I al so have the belief that fermented and moldy foods are better, so the miso and Kōji make me want to try it out
>Challenge Goals: 4/5
As I already said, protein is the main attraction, but the fact that rice is being server one way or another in three different ways makes it proof to the flexibility of rice.

>>12073312 Glutinous Rice Parcels
>Presentation: 2/5
Mostly because of the parley, keep it in cold water to prevent it going soft. I understand this is not a very photogenic dish once unwrapped, but a photo of it before cutting, or using a different wrapper such as banana leaves would have improved the dish's aesthetics greatly, look for zongzi pictures online and see how /comfy/ they seem, even if very modest
>Originality: 4/5
It is like a rice tamal, I love the idea, like a little present you give to someone to their hands and they can unwrap later.
>Appeal: 4/5
Peak /comfy/, but the presentation takes away some of the appeal
>Challenge Goals: 5/5

>>12073340 Rice Flour Crêpe
>Presentation: 1/5
Generally sloppy, some parts seem a bit too browned and there are some parts where you cannot see the shape of your dish. This is technical, not the recipe itself.
The fact that I read your recipe made me want to eat it, it also made me add points in a lot of places, the dish when described sounds good but if you were to look at it by itself you would not think too much about it, think of this, would you be happy to be served this at a café? It should look good, else people may not even want to try it to begin with.
>Originality: 3/5
It is a twist on a Crêpe Suzette, not something you would immediately think about. I saw some drawing comparisons to a banh xeo. In general this is a twist in something common, and not a very large twist.
>Appeal: 5/5
I can smell the spices from here, and I bet that the warm syrup, crêpe and cold ice cream make for a wonderful contrast. I am stealing this recipe
>Challenge Goals: 4/5
Rice is used in yet another way in this dish, the crêpe is the star of the dish and all bites will have it, I am just not too sure how does soaked rice with spices is any different from a normal wheat crêpe with dried spices added to the batter, I would need to try it.

>Presentation: 2/5
Similar to the first entry, there is little care put to the overall shape and presentation, things were just spooned in, but is it difficult to present such a chunky stew, It cannot hold its shape, but it is neither a liquid.
And just like with the parcels the parsley seems a bit sad, looks like it was exposed to heat and oxidized a bit.
>Originality: 4/5
It is a "Whatever You Have At Home", only God knows what could be in it
>Appeal: 3/5
When I think of risotto I think of big spoonfuls of sticky, stringy and buttery rice, but this is a stew, so there is too much water for the rice to become gooey. It is closer to a chicken broth with rice, which is a delicious dish, but is not a risotto
>Challenge Goals: 3/5
Like with the stir-fry's, rice is more of a cohesive part than the main attraction, it makes sure that the flavor is present but it's role is that of support over anything

I know that we may not be allowed to vote our own submissions, but I will be doing this as a way to reflect on what I did, it actually would be better for me not to take my rating into account since I am going to be very harsh

Presentation: 2/5
Basic, too much brown. I was going for the classical plating of half the plate being curry, the other half rice and having the protein on top of the rice like they do on my aneymeys and mangos, but I ended up covering the rice completely, I spent too much time shaping it just to cover it with the chicken
Originality: 2/5
It is my recipe for a classical dish, details like the animal-fat roux and tomato were taken from documentaries while the method was taken from my own studies. The chicken-three-way was due to my disagreement to trowing away things, and rice + sauce is my favorite dish, be it mole with rice, pork ribs with salsa verde and rice or curry, this is a very "me" dish.
However, every family has their own curry recipe, thus this dish is not special outside of how family-cooking can be
Appeal: 5/5
The potato is fluffy and full of flavor since it is cooked in the curry, the carrots and peas are sweet, and it is a very satisfying dish, I went back to the kitchen for single spoons of either curry or rice just to get the perfect ratio in each bite. i know it because i had it, so I am biased
Challenge Goals: 0/5
This is the mother of all "Rice as a complementary element and not the main part". The rice only has salt and water. This dish would have being great if the theme was chicken, but it was not .

My wife and I have been reviewing the entries and we both had an argument over your entry - your post seems to agree with her thoughts, but I have another opinion.

Firstly, I make curry just like yours and served it at drunken parties in college to much applause and cheering. I KNOW it tastes amazing because I still eat curry like this as a 31yo boomer (and my waifu loves it too).
My thoughts are that you CAN NOT HAVE CURRY WITHOUT RICE.
I've experimented in the past with curry on mashed potatoes, curry on flatbreads and other grains - rice is the superior option.
After reading your post, I can see why you'd judge yourself harshly on the theme, but I think your self-critique may be a combo of your plating and plainness of the rice as you explained.

I still think your dish is one of the top three in this round!
I didn't submit a dish this month, but next challenge, I look forward to seeing your presentation Bell-anon.
My final bit of hindsight is that if you had added basil or cilantro to your rice and presented a little color of shredded herb and carrot on your dish, you would be the winrar.

I was planning on making a vertical, but got kind of busy and looked back at the GIMP vertical and got a headache, then I made an Imgur account but that turned out to be even more confusing than GIMP, and all I learned trying to look up a tutorial is that’s what reddit uses. So, I figured I’d just post my “vertical” here, since a couple anons didn’t quite seem to understand my dish. (If that Chinese grill from the last challenge is still around, feel free to make this a proper vertical – not that any of this is going onto the blog.)

Step 1: Acquire good rice and a good rice cooker.

>> No.12079514

>>12079510
Step 2: Follow the directions that came with your rice cooker. You’ll know it’s done when it plays a little song, and this is what it should look like.

>> No.12079518

12079518

>>12079514
Step 3: While your rice is cooking assemble all your toppings and begin preparing them such that they will all be hot and/or ready when the rice is done. This isn’t just making some plain rice and throwing leftovers on it – the rotisserie chicken was the only leftover, and I specifically chose a few pieces of thigh meat and some skin lightly fried in spam fat because those are the best parts. The focus is the bowl of perfectly cooked rice, and the toppings were intentionally chosen for this challenge, as we regularly have threads about at least half a dozen of them, but I really thought showing how to make a basic bowl of rice would be the best thing to get the newer anons interested in this challenge.

>> No.12079524
File: 2.37 MB, 4032x3024, Step 4.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
12079524

>>12079518
Step 4: Put your perfectly cooked rice in a bowl. I didn’t include anything about preparing the other ingredients because those are just examples of what you can do with an anon-don – even though those are the most difficult parts to execute. But seriously, if you’re going to make something that isn’t risotto or pilaf, or using rice in unique ways like a couple anons did, there’s no reason to not use a rice cooker, and it just seemed like nobody actually explained how to make proper rice, so I figured I should. Step 5 is obviously plating, which takes some practice, but is really just something you should have fun with; the anon-don is all about originality.

Alright so we have 5 sets of votes in so far and some interesting, mostly expected, numbers coming in! Since it's coming close to the deadline and I haven't seen a lot of anon voting I think I'll push the deadline forward a couple days to give the thread some visibility.

THE NEW VOTING DEADLINE WILL BE WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27TH AT MIDNIGHT CEST (or 6PM EST)

After this the re-cap will be done here where I will announce the round winner along with the anon's choice for the one who had the highest average anon vote! Sadly I have no moneys for a round 1 prize at the moment but to make up for it I will do a decent open rounds prize for the challenger who gets the best average score in rounds 1-3 provided that he/she submits a dish for at least 2 rounds!

I’m going to follow quaff’s short form scoring and like Bell will rate my own dish, which obviously doesn’t count, but I think does serve some purpose as a follow up reflection on one’s own effort.

>>12073285 FPM 0/1/3/3 7
It’s a basic lazy weeknight fried rice that seems like it might have been posted here as an afterthought, if it didn't look like anon’s first attempt at fried rice. There was obviously no effort put into the presentation, but it’s definitely something I’d eat. I’d recommend going back to the basics and working on your knife skills.

>>12073306 nrrwmndd 4/4/5/5 18
My main criteria for challenge goals is using the ingredient/theme in multiple and unique ways, which you definitely did. It also looks delicious (and props for going 125; everyone always seems to do 127, which is too much when you’re still going to torch/sear it). My only complaint about the presentation is that you can’t really see the rice, you could have taken the pic from a different angle so you couldn’t see the slices of steak that you kind of botched, and the scallions are a little too thick, but that’s honestly just nitpicking.

>>12073312 quaff 3/3/5/3 14
This sounds really great, and based on the pics looks well executed. My only real issue is with the presentation; either go all the way with chopping the cilantro or leave it whole. And while I love chili oil I’d prefer to eat this with it on the side, though that would have taken away from the presentation, which at the same time gives me heartburn (yes, I’d still use that much chili oil even if it was on the side – I just don’t like to see it all there at once, and all on the bottom).

>> No.12081935

>>12081927

>>12073328 Sakeanon 3/1/3/3 10
Looks well made, but completely unoriginal (there’s so much you can do with risotto/arancini). Boomer plating.

>>12073340 Nikon 3/3/2/4 12
Trying something new was always the best thing about the challenge, but it doesn’t always pan out, which is okay. They look alright-ish, and while the presentation is generally good, it does seem a little lacking. Personally, I would have mixed some toasted rice with coconut flakes and fresh mint as a garnish, possibly throwing a few berries in there if I had them.

>>12073349 Poodle 2/3/2/3 10
It should be against the rules to include dogs in your image; they shouldn’t count for anything, but you’re deluding yourself it you honestly believe they don’t make the image far more appealing (I mean, just look at them). Otherwise the dish looks ok. I don’t really think “risotto stew” is a thing, but I’d eat it, and you put more effort into the presentation than some other entries (though I can’t get over the random toast peeking out on the side; that just seems out of place in every possible sense).

>>12073358 ion 2/2/2/3 9
As far as the rice goes, all you really said is, “cook rice, then cook rice even more”. It’s like you googled, “Spain flavor profile” and just kind of went with it. I also don’t understand serving pieces of meat that are too big to eat in one bite in a bowl over something like rice where they’re hard to cut. And those lemon slices seemed to play no part as a garnish, since they’re too thin to squeeze, and you even included an image showing that they were pointless.

>> No.12081945

>>12081935
>>12073362 Tiki Doomer 4/5/3/3 15
I’m generally happy with how the presentation turned out. The initial goal was to have at least half the rice still showing under all the toppings, and I think I did a pretty good job. I didn’t sketch out the plating beforehand, so one wrong placement could have ruined the entire composition. I agree that there should have been a little more color and “freshness”. The focus was the rice, and the toppings used were just common /ck/ examples of things that go well on a bowl of perfectly cooked rice; if your anon-don isn’t a 5/5 on originality that’s on you. I enjoy all of the items on rice, but they obviously don’t all go together. My intention was to show how to cook a perfect bowl of basic rice, which I believe I accomplished, and then give a plethora of suggestions to make it even better. I didn’t do anything unique, or use the rice in multiple ways.

>>12073378 Bell 2/2/3/1 8
There’s virtually no rice anywhere in this. It’s also not very original, but I do appreciate you making a roux from the rendered fat and making stock from the bones. If this were a chicken round you’d have a 5/5 on challenge goals. That’s not an easy dish to make look good, but I’d suggest slicing the chicken on a bias so that you can actually see the juicy (?) inside along with the nicely fried outside, and those scallions look like they were cut from that cute CP grill who makes pancakes. Also, why would you add peas at the same time as carrots and potatoes? They’re obviously going to be overcooked.

This is another anon here. I think you need to see a doctor because you can't see how that egg clearly looks like a prolapsed anus.

Alright, and with that round 1 of the /ck/ Challenge had concluded! Thank you very much to the 9 anons who submitted in round 1 and to those who voted. As we move to the next round, which will begin APRIL 1ST, we will move to a 2 week submission and 3 day voting schedule for rounds here on out as per the poal.me which ended up with 75% of the responses favoring that choice. While I wish there was a bit more anon votes this round hopefully this will change with round 2s theme so for those reading please come and vote even if you are not submitting a dish, especially since we are moving to 100% anon voting for rounds here on out!

So with that being said I'm pleased to announce that the top scorer for Round 1 is...

nrrwmndd !!5q13kDmTZEt with an average score of 16.58! Congrats on taking a big win in the first open round!

The runners up were quaff with an average score of 15.2 and Sakeanon with an average score of 15!

So for those who want that open round average prize, nrrwmndd is the anon to beat! See you all on April 1st and get ready for Round 2 cause it's gonna be a shakeup!

(also I will post full data later, couldn't take >>12091034 votes as they came in later srry!)
