Both reign supreme in one form of nutrition over the other, but combined they are a single, low cost unit that will keep you healthy and under budget.

You would derive most of your protein from the lentils, which means no need to buy meat saving you on overall cost. You could probably get some really cheap pork or chicken if you wanted to, but in the end there will always be some way to make up the different in cost basis.

Try about 7-8 chicken breasts and brown rice and broccoli to give you a dinner for a week at about $15. Some $1 protein bars for lunch, if not, protein powder, peanut butter, and bananas for about $30 to last a month. And then milk, special K protein cereal, eggs, and packaged fish for breakfast at about $7-10 a week.

About $100 a month could easily feed me, but I like to have my vegetables to cook with as well. And I need my oils and little things here and there. So I splurge once in a while, maxing at about $115-130 a month on food. Sometimes beer. Rent is what, $300 or so? Just find a roommate and that's half. Then, what, phone and internet at about $60-100? I could easily live off roughly $400-500 a month if I had to.
That's under 20 hours a week at $7.50 where I'm at, which, spoiler alert, is nothing... Like I need a car or fancy phone... This is of course assuming I don't have to pay the electric, water, and heat bill, which would put somewhere at a $750 a month requirement or so, plus a car and better phone maxing somewhere around $1000 for gas and everything else. Nothing 35 hours a week can't fix. But not as a student.

Cooked it basically doubles in size and also increases the amount of calories you're eating, so divide by 2 for an accurate meal intake. $3 for 2lb of cooked food isn't too shabby.

I like barley better than quinoa, but neither is as cheap as rice.
