If you have to ask that question you'll probably have to learn the hard way. Most people are going to lie to you and those that don't will recommend a knife you don't know how to care for.

Get an unpackaged knife from a stall at your local foreign market and a sharpening stone, and some food grade mineral oil. Learn. Sharpen regularly and don't force the fucker through bone or winter squash unless you know what you're doing.
