Everybody will have their preferences, whether they prefer hops, malt, fruitiness, how refreshing a style is, etc. There was a "widely distributed US craft breweries" tier list a few generals back that was sort of okay, but if you're asking about styles, there are gonna be great examples and horrible examples of each one.

I'm from central Ontario and the only ones I've tried (I think) are from relatively local breweries. Amsterdam Brewery's Boneshaker, a couple from Hop City, and one from Flying Monkey. Of all of them I think Boneshaker I liked the most, but the others all have an extremely overpowering bitter grapefruit flavour. I know ipas are meant to be bitter but damn

It's not the style that's the problem, I had a couple IPAs that were actually good. It's just like with hot sauces though where a lot of them don't go for a good flavor and just add a bunch of capsaicin so they can say it's super spicy. A lot of IPAs didn't go for a good and balanced flavor, just a high IBU because some people would force it down and then make fun of other people who didn't want to drink them too.

My GF doesn't like beer at all and especially hates IPAs. Had her try several, including Elysian Space Dust (my personal favorite), and the only one she liked was Deschutes Fresh Squeezed. She was actually kinda surprised by it.

Don't think too much about it, though, it's hard to get into IPAs, they're not for everybody. I consider myself lucky. One of my friends actually thinks I'm full of shit, that I pretend to like hoppy beer, but there's literally no way to convince people like that.

Either way, based on my GF's experience, my go with Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA. Less bitter, more flavor.

Best advice I can give you is to pay attention to:

>which hops
>which additions (early, late, dry, etc.)
>which hops used for each addition

IPAs are about as prolific in range as beer is to itself, subtle or no. Take it slow, bro.

Boneshaker is a good brew, but I feel it's a bit overhopped in some batches that I have tried. When I think overpowering, I think Boneshaker.

Haven't tried too many Ontario IPAs, but one of my favourites that are also consistent are the ones from Great Lakes Brewery, like Karma Citra and Octopus Wants To Fight. Flying Monkeys does good IPAs, and Beau's last year released their flagship Full Time IPA, I suggest checking that out, it's very solid.

You mean Spencer Trappist Ale? I've tried it, it's a solid 7.5, quite surprisingly light on the mouth feel. But I feel it's inferior to stuff like Rochefort or Westmalle. Wouldn't mind drinking it if given it to me, but wouldn't earnestly seek it out or buy it again methinks.

If you don't have the palate for IPA, you don't. It's not a huge deal, man. You definitely won't like space dust. If you really want to get into them, start with pale ales. Sierra Nevada is pretty safe, then spread out from there. Try to look for more dry-hopped ales, they're usually the most flavorful and you can pull out a lot of citrus. You may get a taste for bitterness after a while.

Chimay is a decent stepping-stone to get into Belgians, and I think Chimay 750cl is quite nice but it costs $15 where you live? Here it costs $7.50.

Glassware makes a slight improvement to the mouth and nose of the beer, I think it's a worthy investment if you're going to get more into Belgians. Some mixed-packs sell it included.

You should try Blue Chimay, but stuff like St. Bernardus, Westmalle and Rochefort I think are much better than Chimay.

As for recommendations Westmalle are good, many from La Trappe are good and on the cheaper side. Bock, Puur, Dubbel for example.
Engelzell Benno is great. Gregorius is decent too.
I haven't had the kingpin of Trappists westy XII but it's considered great. Chimay doree goud remains the best Trappist I've had. It's divine.
Also there are many great Belgian Abbey beers that aren't true Trappist like St Bernardus for example.

Very white. I'm drinking the Cobra now. When I was buying this the guy at the liquor store said he didn't need to card me because only decrepit old men buy this stuff. King Cobra is very mild. I don't think any standard gravity malt liquor has any harsh taste. Even some of the ~8% ones like Hurricane HG are pretty mild. But there isn't any real flavor. Just a malt and corn taste with lots of sweetness.
