Only had "From the Barrel" last night. It's my first cask-strength sample so I noticed the higher abv on my first sip, but it's not unpleasant. Smells very sweet, taste is initially sweet and fruity but has some oak spice show up quickly and ends with a little bitterness. The finish is super long, I wouldn't smoke or eat with this because the taste lingers for so long. Tastes great, the only thing that tells me it's strong is the tingling in my whole mouth when I sip. Also I got sloshed off one little glass because I'm a lightweight. If you're outside the US, I recommend it. I got mine from an airport in EU. I'll try the pure malt black either tonight or tomorrow, in whichever thread is up

Sadly I haven't had it yet. I know it used to be a big travel-retail exclusive that everyone raved about, and now that it's available outside airports people have calmed down about it. In that sense, From the Barrel seems to be similar, since Americans can either pay 100+ for international shipping, or get it in an airport somewhere like I did. Where do you live? That affects things. And also keep in mind if you're new to whisky, From the Barrel is a HUGE burst of flavor and I think some people will have trouble getting past the abv

Well if you've only had jack before, this will be totally different for you. Honestly jack is shit, and in USA it's popular with alcoholics who want something cheap, college kids who mix with coke, and people who don't know any better. Since you're in the EU, you're lucky and you can get nice international blends like this easily. I'd say go for it, if you don't like it at first then just set it aside and try some others, then come back to it later. I also recommend Nikka Coffey Malt, it's my current favorite (but these two I just got might change that after I try them some more)

Yeah it was a gift from a relative in India, they love Johnnie Walker over there for some reason.

He also gave me pic related, which I'm sipping on tonight. It's a little better, but it honestly doesn't matter since Johnnie Walker isn't really all that bad. It's good for what it is.

Green is really the best of the JW lineup. I used to drink Black regularly until I began my journey into single malts. I have a bottle of Platinum that I didn’t crack open yet, but considering it’s discontinued I think I’d rather hold onto it.

Speaking of single malts, can anyone explain why the Macallan 18 is 4x the price of the 12? Most 18-years are 2x, and even then their worth is debatable, but 4x? I don’t know how they justify it.

I found an unopened bottle of jw green in a bathroom at Narita airport. It was in the area where you transfer from an international incoming flight to the rest of the airport for a connection. I sat there (had to shit after all) for a while thinking how I could keep it but couldn't come up with anything, which is probably why it was abandoned. Some stupid fuck probably bought it duty free in his departure airport, not knowing you have to make your alcohol purchases in your last international connection leg.

I've had it though, good stuff. I actually really like Double Black which I got a good deal on my last trip through Dubai (two liters and a bonus tenth of Crown for 45 bucks). It's not bad neat. It's no 12 year old single malt to be sure, but it was decent.

I tried a locally made whiskey out of a combination of curiosity and the fact that I'm easily upsold. It tastes almost exactly like Wild Turkey, but with a touch of mint. So not terribly complex, but sweet enough for a bourbon, and on the interesting side. It was extremely smooth, to the point where the only bit that gives off the 45% ABV is in the aroma. If it wasn't for the smoothness, I'd say I overpaid by $10. Bottle was $38, Wild Turkey 101 is about $28 around here. Not something I'll buy again, but at least it was interesting to try a minty whiskey.

Depends on the Cask and fill. If it's a 45 year old 3rd fill ex bourbon Cask it'll unironically be better than a 1st fill because a first fill for that long will overpower the spirit's qualities and basically all you'll get is wood like you get in Pappy 23 or Elijah Craig 21 because the new char is too strong and makes your bourbon taste like all oak and nothing else.
Just try some stuff at a pub and if you find one you wouldn't bat an eye at paying for then go for it.

Only way I find regular CC drinkable without mixing is on the rocks. It's pretty rough. For a few dollars more, I much prefer Classic 12.

However, it makes a superb Rye & Ginger.

Found Scapa quite boring.

Oban 14 is my most recent re-discovery. I love it.

Definitely prefer Laphroaig 10 over Talisker. Talisker is just over the top with the whole sea-water flavour thing. It's fun but the novelty wears out whereas Laphroaig never gets old

Abelour A'Bunadh. Really really tasty. Cask strength so you need to add some water before consuming.

Scapa really needs higher proof to shine I find, most of their stuff is sadly 43% despite some interesting coastal qualities.

I wish Cragganmore wasn't all 40% shit, really want to try an SMWS single cask from them cause i hear their cragganmore is really good

Honestly, I tried Cragganmore 12 and it's quite boring compared to the Distiller's Edition. The Port cask finishing works wonders for this one and it's quite bolder in taste generally. Maybe the 40% added to the boredom factor of the 12 year old but in the Distiller's Edition I'd say it's good because the alcohol doesn't overpower the aromas.

Am I pleb for really enjoying this? It's the cheapest mid-range whiskey that I buy regularly where I live. I can't stand Jameson's.

Anything else similar to this?

No, having a personal preference does not make you a pleb.
Dew is pretty low-end but it's definitely one of the better whiskeys in that price range. I like some pretty expensive ones myself but I wouldn't feel insulted if someone served me that and I would have no problem drinking it.
It works very well for mixing.

Pic related is the worst I've ever had. Bought it on a trip to Dublin because I was curious. I've since made a bit of a tradition of trying some really low-end alcohol every time I go there.
Wasn't even that cheap either. Boose actually is pretty expensive in Ireland. I don't remember the exact price but it was definitely more than €10. Possibly more than 15 too.

Thoughts on any of these single malts? They're what I can get for an entry-level price here:

>Glen Moray Classic Peated
>Glen Moray 12
>Aberlour 10
>Arran 10
>Aberfeldy 12
>Tomatin 12
>Singleton 12
>Bowore No.1 Islay
>Aberlour 12
>Bowmore 12

I like peatier, smokier whisky in general, which is why Bowmore interests me (although I don't know which one to get).

Anything out of Islay, but my top picks are Lagavulin and Laphroaig.
Connemara is also nice (Irish, but peated and double distilled)

I've found that in the last years the quality of Lagavulin has gone down the drain. Not to say it's undrinkable but it used to be some of the best shit out there and last time I tried it it was absolutely meh. Hope they recover or that I just stumbled upon a bad batch.

I remember their brewmaster being pretty old (I took the tour). Hope the little guy's doing alright. Let's hope is was a bad batch and not that they ran out of Cherry casks, there's a global shortage

Go to is Laphroaig but I've been trying out the legal 'shine lately. Where I'm at a lot of the legal stills are just old illegal stills that ended up getting all their licenses worked out in the last 10 or 15 years, so it's actually decent.
