Happy new beer edition

Best beers you drank in 2017?

What trends will we see in 2018?

What beers did you drink over the holidays?

Are you a bad enough dude to fill your glass as full as pic related?

Drinking one of these tonight. Best beer I've had from fairstate. Their Roselle is good too.
I'm going up to Duluth for a few days though and was wondering if there are any breweries besides bent paddle and castle danger worth going to. Any of the mnfags? I heard fitgers is supposed to be pretty solid and thirsty pagan across the bridge is always a stop for me as well

I doubt we'll see many trend changes. Maybe more experimental yeasts used for beer or barrel finished beer but other than that it'll probably be
>focus on stout for winter
>focus on pilsners for spring
>focus on IPA for summer
>focus on pumpkin ales for fall
And so on

Indeed Rum King (though apparently 2016's was better--didn't get to try that one)

>Trends
Fuck if I know. Hopefully so many people figure out NEIPAs that they get a bit cheaper

>Over the holidays
Blacklist Or de Belgique, some Fair State Pils (but I mostly used it for cooking), Surly Barrel-Aged Pentagram (good but gave me some nasty heartburn), uncle's homebrewed stout

He didn't even try to get a head on that thing, how can he smell it

>>9916989
Blacklist has some solid Belgian stuff. They can a few of their beers (big fan of Dark and Spruce) but there are some taproom exclusives like a cranberry golden ale and an apple dubbel. Hoops is super high quality in general but always rotating their taps, so it's hard to pin down a recommendation for a specific beer. They had a cherry ale on tap over the holidays that was great, not sure if it's still pouring. Also, Bent Paddle has Double Shot Double Black on tap rn if you haven't tried it.

The year round stuff is pretty average, nothing remarkable about them (though HHG is a solid APA).
Their barrel aging program is excellent though, I wouldn't hesitate to pick up any of their BA 4 packs if you see it. The Black Gold is just ridiculously good, though don't expect to find it at retail, I just lucked into a bar next door to me having it on tap one day

Best beers I had this year were probably a 5 taster flight of AleSmith's Speedway Stout.

As already said, NEIPA's are the new thing, and having just moved back west from New England, it's a shitty trend.

Currently drinking pic related. Port's "Santa's little helper" is an okay holiday brew, but I really like Port in general.

No. I don't fill my glass up all the way to the top; when I'm that drunk I overflow it and spill all over myself.

I had Fair State's pilsner this weekend and was less than impressed. I'm fairly sure it was just old, though. It was pretty hoppy, and it was a month old already, so it probably wasn't at the top of its game.

Thank god I had a bottle of Founders Breakfast Stout lurking in my cupboard.

>A proper APA is incredibly well balanced in my mind, but I agree that double and imperial IPAs are at their best when balanced

I think that it's because it's the purest form of beer: just hops and malts being balanced out. And doubles and triples (it's hard to find a good quad that I'm willing to drink more than once a month) just up the amount of malts, which means balancing it out with more hops. It's not everyone's taste, but I just think triples are at the right level of heaviness for me.

It's embarrassing to admit, but I never really understood what makes a beer an "imperial".

I normally drink local but I have been the mood for some German styles the past 2 weeks.

Dunkel lagers, Dunkelweizen, Dopplebock, Wezienbock, Eisbock, Rauchbier, Kellerbier, Landbier

I really wish more American breweries would release these styles. We make good German style beer but we need more variety.\

Yeah in Ohio this is very easy to find and a tallboy is only a dollar. It tastes more like beer than Natural Ice does. I think MillerCoors brews this one in Trenton, Ohio, and in many of the other Miller breweries. I've had Steel Reserve and it was potent and boozy, but I like the availability and price. My friend tried it and said it was the worst he's had. A lot of people really hate it. Olde English was better than some of the other 6 percent malt liquors. King Cobra is everywhere, but idk about the taste. Actual 40s of Steel Reserve and Olde English are hard to find for some reason. To be honest the tall cans are more cost efficient anyway, and you only have to drink 24/16/12 ounces at once depending on size.

most people start with loud obvious flavors. sugar bombs are your friend. some imperial stouts, chocolate stouts, espresso stouts. the nitro milk stout that the other guy suggested is pretty good although by no means a sugar bomb.

there are some sugar bomb IPAs too but they are outnumbered by the dry kind. you could look for dogfish head 120 minute IPA, that stuff is like 8000 calories for a 12 oz bottle. I do not suggest drinking the stuff ice cold, aim for high 50s to low 60s fahrenheit

I'm a stout whore and don't need recommendations. I try all the stouts I can find locally. It's just that Guinness is the only stout available at the grocery store a block away where I shop for groceries every other day and I've found that a shot of coffee liqueur turns it, an otherwise mediocre beer, into something wonderful. I wouldn't mix it with something like a Speedway Stout or a Breakfast Stout.

Start with a good German (Or Czech) pilsner. Most people associate pale lager as the core beer taste so that's where you should start.

After that, no matter if you liked it or not, you should start with mild entry level things from other styles. I recommend Guinness Draught, Kilkenny Irish Red and a Hefeweizen.

I don't think 60 min is particularly atypical but haven't had it in a while. I would say the best widely available old school IPA is Bells Two Hearted
The biggest problem with IPA is that most of the large nearly national craft brewers have flagship IPAs that predate modern techniques but are entrenched so they aren't just going to replace them so you are probably better off going with a newer local IPA. Especially those featuring citra/mosaic hops
A really good widespread one you should be able to find now is Founders Azacca IPA

You've got good taste with Thirsty Pagan, and if you're in wisconsin, don't forget to get some Spotted Cow or something.

Duluth also has Lake Superior Brewing Company, but I wasn't really impressed with any of their beers. There's also Hoops down in Canal which is started by the guy who originally made the Fitgers brews (he had a no-compete that expired last year). I wasn't too thrilled, but they have a large selection on Tap. If you're looking to just sample different beers, there is 7 west Tap House that has like, 40 taps and often rotate stock.

I don't think many of the larger craft breweries have been doing a great job keeping up with newly available strains of hops and recently popular hop scheduling techniques. I actually just had the new version of Sam Adams "rebel IPA" at the movie theater the other day and it was surprisingly good though. Definitely check out the aforementioned Azacca IPA from Founders, I've been seeing it in 15 pack cans which is awesome. I'm not really up to speed on most of the offerings of the nation craft brewers though I am sure most any IPA they have newly released in the last few years would be at least pretty good

Meadfag reporting in. I've made a total of around 5 gallons, so I'm no expert, but what I used was some raw, unpasteurized buckwheat honey that I got off of Ebay, Lalvin 71B-1122 yeast, and filtered water (I'm the above Duluthfag though, and we have great water as is). My results were a sweet mead. I also used a D-47 yeast that made a drier mead, still good. I did enjoy the 1122 yeast more though, because I like it to be a little sweeter. I don't backsweeten, or use any sulfides. My last batch literally sat on the lees for months and it was still pretty damn tasty. I think the key in this case is to use a good honey.
