Going to try my hand at old fashioned donuts tomorrow using this recipe http://americanheritagecooking.com/2016/02/old-fashioned-sour-cream-cake-donuts/

Any experienced donut makers have tips for a beginner? I'm not new to baking but this is my first time venturing into the land of donuts, I really appreciate any advice.

Also what's your favorite donut?

not experienced donut maker, but make sure you have a decent amount of oil. so that your temp doesn't drop a ton when you put a few donuts in.
and make sure you cook them at a normal temp.
hard to say what my favorite is. cherry cake but hardly anyone makes them. so I usually go with yeast donut with chocolate or maple icing
post pics please OP

like that guy said, make sure you have enough oil

deep frying isnt really economic if you arent making a large amount or reusing oil

be sure to work in batches and dont crowd the pan, and be sure to take time to let the oil climb to 350 before you put new dough in

if you dont have a thermometer handy then use a small amount of dough to test the oil

the old fashioned is actually my favorite, or a german apple fritter

Actually, those are my favorite. I like the crumbly texture and the crispy surface. They're more like bread than dessert. It feels like a substantial breakfast even though I know it isn't. Other donuts do not compare and are just weak-ass desserts.

i disagree
to me the closed cakey texture and slight tanginess gives it way more richness than other donuts, but thats why i like them

the worst donut is the classic glazed btw. anyone who takes a plain glazed when there are other options probably has people locked in their basement

I agree with the things this guy said

I'm not sure what point you disagreed with.

Good luck OP! protip: they gonna cook faster than you think, but don't worry if they're a little darker than at Dunkin Donuts, IMO they taste best when they're dark brown like cocoa powder.

all this talk about old fashioned. I truly am a lover of donuts. but I don't think I've eaten an old fashioned, will make it a point to get one next time i'm at a donut shoppe
