What's /ck/'s opinion on Red Velvet style pastries? Just tried some and gotta say, this stuff's dangerous.

red velvet is just chocolate with fuckloads of food coloring, right?

Somewhere between chocolate and vanilla and the icing is a very rich type of cheesecake.

Yup. And cream cheese for frosting

I feel like red velvet cake is only around because people try it over and over again because it looks good. But then they taste it and instead of being fruity or something it tastes like the cake equivalent of white chocolate. It's not gross but it's just bland as fuck and the icing doesn't save it. I would say the icing is actually a weird contrast to the cake and actually makes it worse. It's a shit tier meme dessert that just serves to make a spread seem more vibrant.

also niggers love it so that should say something

If you enjoy the taste of food coloring you will enjoy red velvet.

I think it depends a lot on where you get it. My grandma used to make some pretty awesome red velvet cake. I can see what you mean though based on most of the times I've had red velvet stuff. I still enjoy it either way, but I think it depends a lot on being made right.

white trash chocolate cake

Why wouldn't you just make a brown velvet instead of the red one?

Don't fall for the meme cheese - red velvet is supposed to use ermine / "cold gravy" frosting.

it's literally just chocolate cake with red food coloring and cream cheese icing.

There's different styles. Evidently the cheapest stuff is just chocolate cake but the original versions had no chocolate at all.

that is literally the opposite of what I have found. it was red velvet because the chocolate with the acids in the cake made it a reddish hue. you can only get the reddish hue with non-dutch processed coco, though by my standards it's not that red at all, but that was the reason for the name
