The family has decided on brisket for Christmas dinner. My dad is insisting that the brisket be smoked. Dad is blissfully unaware of his lack of BBQ skills. I'm intent on braising the delicious brisket and having a delicious and heroic gravy to go with our potatoes.

How do I get dad to back the fuck off his smoking pretenses?

Dad has smoked brisket like 4 times in my whole life. It was always "meh how bad can brisket really be anyways?" level of good. I just think we have better options...and gravy is always a plus.

It sounds like more of an individual issue than something wrong with smoked brisket altogether. If he insists on smoked maybe try adding apple or cherry wood, make your gravy on the side and go light on it

Convince him to let you tea-smoke it. That way it gets a nice smokey flavor and you can get a gravy from cooking it before you do the smoking.
