If I have no experience whatsoever in kitchens and I'm looking to switch fields is it a good idea to stage or would it be better to get a job as like a dishwasher or something

i can't imagine anyone actually considering this.

I've debated becoming a dishwasher just so I could have some simplicity in my work life. I make far more managing tech projects but fuck it's mentally exhausting and terrible for my health. I wouldn't even want to work my way up a ladder again, just put in 8-12 hours of labor and go home.

its minimum wage - whatever minimum wage is in your state thats what you will be paid.

Fine by me, I'm already financially stable.

You'll get in excellent shape, have free food and get to bang waitresses willy nilly so I say go for it if your financial exigencies are covered. The main thing will be trying to avoid falling into the severe drug and alcohol addiction that surrounds restaurant work.

>tfw worked as a dishwasher for the past week
>today I was being trained to become a cook

>fired on the spot
Don't do it. They are mean.

you have to wash not only plates but pans utensils glassware or any other thing that might need cleaning like cutting boards or tray pans. and you close 100% of the time. it's not worth it. I've been there and nobody fucking helps you.

Just start your own restaurant or something if you want to be in the food business.

what an asshole. I swear shit rolls down from customers to server to chef to prep to all the way down to washers and bussers in this field. Did you ask them if they'll put you back into washing dishes, at least?

This, it's way better to work as a janitor crew instead.

First off,how old are you anon? The kitchen is a young mans game. As far as stage vs starting off bottom rung.... Get in where you fit in bro. I'm coming up on my 8th year cooking and would not trade it for the world. If you really want this you need to be honest,open-minded and willing. Good luck bro

This is close to the truth

Similar question, but what if I have years of experience working with food in another setting? I've done tons of prep for coked items in deli, meat, and seafood departments, so while I haven't worked in a restaurant, I'm not a stranger to knife skills or time constraints.
Also, how hard is it to get a restaurant butcher job? Are those usually hired from people with a culinary school type of background or can a retail meat cutter potentially get in?

>terrible for my health

So is dish-washing. Mentally exhausting as well, with piss poor pay. Think about it long and hard and do your research, extensively.
