Let's say you only eat 1200kcal of X (carbs, fats, or protein) and your body converts it directly into fat. You're still alive, so your body needs energy the rest of the day. So it will start breaking down fat, 2000kcal worth of it let's say, throughout the day. No matter what pathway you think the food goes through, you HAVE to use a certain amount of energy. At the end of the day, you will lose weight if you consume less energy than you use. There simply is no possible way for you to keep staying alive if you're not using energy from your body stores (fat or muscle). It doesn't matter what type of energy you eat.

No, that's completely wrong. Most of the time your body is getting its energy directly from glycogen and sugars in the blood, neither burning muscle nor fat. That is highly inefficient, it's only something your body would do when the blood sugar becomes too low to function normally or when you are using energy faster than your normal digestion can can resupply the blood sugar (i.e. if you are exerting yourself).

>They also directly applied the substance to the neuron, which isn't how digestion works. Wrong again. I guess I have to paste the whole context:
>Since the report of “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome” in 1968, various studies have confirmed the link between MSG intake and its side effects including headaches [4, 5]. In those studies, an oral dose of MSG at 3g or higher reproduced restaurant syndrome within 30 min [5]. A direct intravenous dose of 50 mg also produced similar symptoms. Although the MSG concentration in the blood is difficult to predict with oral doses of MSG, a direct intravenous injection of 50 mg MSG is expected to yield a blood concentration of 53 µM (based on the total blood volume of 5 litters). Although the blood brain barrier (BBB) has low permeability to MSG, the presence of high affinity glutamate transporters located at the BBB capillary luminal membrane could facilitate the uptake of MSG into the brain. Assuming 10% of the blood concentration can be reached in the cerebral spinal fluid, it would yield ∼5 µM MSG in the brain which is above the threshold concentration of MSG for causing neuronal injury in our studies. Thus, the concentrations of MSG used in our studies were clinically relevant. Our finding that neuronal swelling takes place at ∼30 min after MSG treatment is also consistent with the time course of MSG-induced headache in clinical studies.

? grams oral -> 50 mg intravenous > .053 mg blood concentration -> .005 mg in cerebrospinal fluid, which is above the threshold for brain damage

Let's assume conservatively that only 10% of ingested MSG makes it to your bloodstream. I'm sure it's more since it's an amino acid, but let's go with that. 500mg of MSG is enough to trigger this brain damage.

Correct. But irrelevant. When we're discussing calories in food we aren't quoting the literal calories you'd get from a bomb calorimeter measurement. Instead the numbers we talk about -- 4 calories per gram for carbs and protein, 7 for alcohol, and 9 for fat, are already corrected for the inefficiencies for the human digestive system. The numbers are called "Atwater factors" after the name of the scientist who researched them. The numbers you read on the back of a food package are already adjusted for how the human body works.

>> No.9691100

>>9691074
I agree with your position broadly, but other posters seem to be trying to say that if you were not eating a nutritionally balanced diet (for example, getting all your calories from alcohol), those factors would no longer be accurate. They are a good average at the population level but for an individual you may find yourself unable to metabolize nutrients in the usual way.

It's still "Calories in, Calories out" but the number of "Calories in" is no longer easy to measure because you don't know how efficiently you are metabolizing those nutrients. The only reason people get into such retarded arguments about this is because they are working from different basic definitions. The "physicists" talking about thermodynamics don't care about the details on the nutrition facts label (if it says 200 kcal and you only get 150 out of it, that just counts as 150 to them), while the "nutritionists" are thinking about it from more of a practical "how do I decide what to eat when I'm trying to lose weight" side. Of course in a world without nutrition labels, you would just gradually decrease your food intake while monitoring your weight.

>> No.9691120

>>9691100
>but the number of "Calories in" is no longer easy to measure because you don't know how efficiently you are metabolizing those nutrients.

But we do know how efficently we are metabolizing nutrients. That's what I just stated: the numbers (Atwater Factors) are already corrected for how the human digestive system works. Now it is true that there is some variation between people, but that variation is terribly small. Google it. There have been a number of recent studies done and the overwhelming majority of the human race has a very similar metabolic rate. Of course there could always be outliers, but they are extremely rare. We're talking lottery-winning rare.

>>Of course in a world without nutrition labels, you would just gradually decrease your food intake while monitoring your weight.
I would suggest that people do that even in a world with labels. The main problem is not inaccuracy in lableing, it's that:
a) most people are horrible at estimating the amount of food they eat
and
b) most people don't bother to get out a scale and actually measure their consumption.
...people mainly just guess, and they're very bad at it.

Yes. Maybe you have heard the popular factoid that honey never goes bad (due to bacterial growth at least)? This is rooted in the fact that the ratio of sugar to water in honey is so high that microbes cannot survive in it.

Here's a good NIH source about it https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3609166/

"absorb calories" is meaningless except colloquially, so I will interpret that as "metabolize nutrients." If your body does not metabolize some of the nutrients you eat, your "calories in" is maybe lower than you expected it to be based on labeling, but it still doesn't violate "CICO"

you shouldn't be drinking so much as to affect how often you pee. you should just drink when you're thirsty until you're not thirsty.

life has evolved over millions of years and the organisms who didn't drink when they were thirsty died so we clearly know when to drink.

while excess water isnt too bad, too much can cause headaches, nausea, and migraines in some cases. also those excess "chemicals" in your bladder could be used when needed so simply flushing them more often can harm you. some animals even drink each others piss so they can get the salt and other minerals.

I continue to agree with CICO, I'm just trying to show where the "controversy" comes from in the first place. CICO must be true from a physical perspective, but from a nutritional perspective the "wrong" diet might make you so sick that you no longer metabolize nutrients efficiently or might make your "output" unpredictable.

Chinese restaurant syndrome is most likely real, but I believe it's the cooking wine. I think you fry away a lot less of the alcohol when you stir-fry compared to typical western cooking. It's of course a mild alcohol buzz but when you don't know just what it is it can be moderately uncomfortable.

i already typed this and lost it so you're getting the shortened version now.

your body will convert basic carbs (monoglycerides) into glycogen and then ATP and will convert advanced carbs into stored fat unless there is enough fiber to support it being broken down. even when monoglycerides are present your body will refer to turn fats that are ingested into glycogen but even this can be skipped via ketosis.

my gf's dad was 350lbs, lost it all in just over a year with exercise and cutting most carbs, hit a weight floor of 180 but stopped dieting so strictly for 4 years, started a ketogenic diet (high fat, high salt, low carbs) and is now 160.

>>9683099
is correct in what he said but you also have to account for other sources of carbs and even diet drinks as these simulate sugar and cause insulin resistance.

as shown in this graph, actually eating 2 times as much salt as recommended is better than eating half as much. some animals even cause an intentional salt deficit to promote fat gain for the winter.

kcals/cals have no real relation to weight gain/loss. while it may work for some people, you cant simply lose weight by eating low calorie foods. diet drinks actually cause weight gain as they increase insulin resistance preventing the body from producing ATP as efficiently. cals measure how much energy is in a food when its burned under pure oxygen, not by its ATP production so cals don't even relate to energy. you could also look at the fact that multiple foods have the same amount of calories but weigh different amounts (not just water)

There is something in Chinese food that doesn't agree with me. Everytime I've ever had it about 30 minutes later my stomach just knots and the next I know I'm pissing liquid shit out my arse. It always happens and I have no idea why.
I thought it might be some sort of intolerance, it happens when I eat pizza from this one particular takeaway as well.

>>9682317
When we talk about "salt" in food, we're talking about sodium ion (chloride is not important). It's what you taste, and it's what your body uses as an electrolyte.
