Because they couldn't make glass, ceramic was sorta expensive, and metal was hard to make well. They had plenty of wood and bamboo though, so they used wood. They were also really good at fitting wood together without the use of nails or glue.

Just got this and I know I sound like a shill but hear me out. Any vacuum-insulated "flask" does the same thing, which is keep hot things hot and cold things cold, but I like the form factor of this one. Much better than a normal coffee mug because the coffee won't go cold in a matter of thirty minutes.
