Here's why: you want to protect you bottom bun from getting soggy at all costs so it doesn't fall apart and you lose all your shit out of your burger. The idea is that the thin layer of mayo/sauce on the bottom acts as a barrier to give the bottom bun more life, and it also creates a kind of sauce of its own from the burger drippings. I also find that sometimes a good light slaw with a vinegar-based dressing is just as good as a dill pickle and also eliminates the need for lettuce. Also tomatoes are awesome on burgers when in season, but if they aren't then they aren't worth it.

At the end of the day though, like any good red-blooded American, I'll demolish even a mediocre burger. I actually much prefer burgers to even pizza.

Huh? I've always seen it put directly on the bun, so that it acts as a glue of sorts to keep the burger together. This is why lettuce should not be in direct contact with buns, they fall out too easily.
