Just moved into a new apartment, and our kitchen is really under equipped. We only have a shitty chef's knife and a couple stainless steel saucepans.

What are the basic things that every kitchen needs to have? What are some good, not too expensive brands for this stuff?

That image gets a comment along those lines every time. It's just a joke really, but I honestly only ever get my measuring spoons out when I'm baking something finicky. What else do you use them for?
