Welcome to /beer general/!

This is the place on /ck/ to discuss and shitpost about beer.

I set up a Discord and a Telegram server like I said a few threads ago to see which would be more popular:

Discord: https://discord.gg/FHxk3Wc

Isn't it?

Budweiser water is terrible, which is why it's a conundrum to me to why they are the number one brand across the country. I appreciate a good dunkel, trappist, IPA, stout, or porter, but at some point I realized that it's more important just to have a beer in my hand than what it actually contains. And light refreshes more, doesn't get you as drunk as fast, and helps you get back on your feet easier than full the day after. Such is the 'lism.

I'm Australian, so my only exposure to US macro is when I go to a American eatery and there's one there and a friend orders for us, since it's usually the cheapest beer there.

Anon, there is no way you've ever had REAL beer if that's your complaint. There's no way you could think that the crisp dryness of a Saison is the same as the fruity sweetness of an auld bruin or the rich velvety bitterness of a cream stout. Enjoying this smoked porter from Sierra Nevada and Garage Project at the moment. Garage Project is probably my favourite NZ brewery.

Decent porter with vanilla and honey but can't taste much smokiness.

I don't know what possessed me to buy the whole Beer Camp 12 pack as I'm not much of a fan of Sierra Nevada and it wasn't very fresh. I guess I just liked the variety.

If you're familiar with otra vez it's that with a soft well rounded after taste, hint of oaky vanilla. Like a beer champagne kinda? If you're not familiar with otra vez it's a cactus fruit gose that is fairly sour but can have a slight hint of butyric acid (from the lactobacillus used in gose I assume) that is not present in this barrel aged type. w00tstout is great, I got two to have now and one to save for next year and do a side by side. The wheat notes are blessedly demure and it's just a solid dessert stout. I'd have it after a meal rather than with. One thing I will ding it for which might not even be a negative is it definitely tastes like it's ABV, the alcohol is on the back of your tongue the whole time, tempered by the sweetness

Yes. They do have some very nice beers, but I've gotten kind of burned out of some because for a long time they were sort of the standard for going out and having a cold one at a watering hole. Once SPB and Yazoo and a couple of others got popular, became available and had some good releases, I got on board with them and have not been let down.
They're their own worst enemies though. If they start trying to make hipster beer with sinister themes, they'll just fall in with the others like them. Don't get me wrong, I do like a lot of the trendier IPA selections from the Pacific Northwest area and Midwest brewers. They're just trying to be over the top some times. That double dry hopped IPA I posted earlier on this thread is not at all a ridiculous hop explosion, but a genuinely good IPA with a beautiful color, head and wonderful citrus aromatic quality. I didn't pay as much attention to these things until I cared enough because my brewer was local. I still enjoy voodoo ranger and goose island occasionally. They're just decent beers. Hard to deny without sounding like a douche in my view.

Prairie Ale's Bomb! - if you like coffee and chili notes, the Birthday version isn't worth the extra price but the barrel aged is

Southern Tier Warlock - if you're a fan of pumpkin, this is a stout version of their Pumking which is excellent already, seasonal offering

Evil Twin (various) - if you've never had any version of Double Barrel Jesus or Even More Jesus or Coco Jesus they are all worth trying. The Bible Belt is something I'm not sure they've even produced in a bit but they did it in a collab with Prairie and it's heavenly

Stone w00tstout - limited offering, it has no right being as good as it is with the silly name and collab with Will Wheaton

Weyerbacher Tiny - this is a stout that takes its spicyness and fruityness seriously. Full bodied in your mouth and it tastes like it's substantial ABV. I'm just a fanboy of the brewery in general

Oskar Blues Ten Fidy - Absolutely solid example of its style. I'd put it a notch over North Coast's Old Rasputin which you should also check out if you haven't. Gloriously malty without being overrun by coffee and chocolate that are there to temper the alcohol

Bell's Expedition Stout - Not sure when it comes available this year but their website says this month, haven't seen it in my neck of the woods unfortunately. A more complex offering than others on this list, it's got a lot to unpack and is a candidate for cellaring

had this earlier

tomorrow I'll be going on a beer run for my once a week binge

was hooked up with the old sample bottle of la trappe catching up with a beer manager at a place that WAS a craft beer mecca.

hes trying to bring it back yet owners are suing each or something.

tried out a sweet water tropical IPA it was alright.

tomorrow its a trip to total wine wanna get a mix a six and a bomber of something.

Nice, it's my Friday tradition to pick out 4 to 8 beers prioritizing new arrivals or stuff I've been recommended. Sometimes I cellar stuff, some I drink right away, some just chills in my fridge for a couple weeks until I get around to it. Been doing this ever since I discovered a beer place within a 30 minute drive from me that actually has great selection.

It's relatively cheap and I enjoy trying new stuff and expanding my knowledge as much as I enjoy getting the same stuff I know I like which I still get in larger amounts less frequently.

Been a long time fan of the oskar blues/hotbox coffee ipa and the porter has rotated back around now so I grabbed that for the first time and was pleased with it. Had a blonde from a local brewery that was nothing special but great to end my night with after I had a fairly bitter offering from clown shoes.

Had the pleasure of wrangling this monster from Lervig and Evil Twin. Extremely rich and strong at 16%, but somehow managed to be smoother than the Belgians I regularly drink.

They're honestly not a great brewery. Their stuff tends to be overpriced and way too sweet, especially their imperial stouts (though Warlock is ok). It's also not surprising they'd do a bad BA beer when they never really do them.

Look for consistently good barrel aged beers, hopefully they'll make up for your bad first experience.
