Japanese beer is *just* starting to get into the craft beer thing, and even then it's very very very fringe. And it's pretty expensive. So you might go to a supermarket and find in a whole 2 aisles of beer and liquor stuff you'll find 3 varieties of craft beer, and they're not even that flavorful or interesting.

SS Nut Brown Ale was a 3.7/5 for me, but it was one of the better brown ales I've tried. Not a very impressive style, as I'd rate Newcastle a 3.2/5.

Pic related is a solid 4.3/5, and I don't even like IPAs that much. It's the perfect balance of citrusy notes to bitterness, and as you work your way down the glass, it gets more bitter, but keeps being refreshing. Almost beats SN Torpedo in my book.

No, Tintin, it's because IPAs were the first widely popular craft beer style, not only in America but also internationally because of their strong flavour in contrast to macro-lagers, leading to an upward spiral of greater availability and higher demand. 'Cheap quality' or ease of brewing simply has nothing to do with it; there are good brewers and bad brewers, just like any other type of ale, with the only difference being scale of production. If you still don't believe me, I'd like to see you try brewing something on par with Dogfish Head or Stone.

Belgians are fairly easy to find in the US. You can find most of the well known/acclaimed EU Trappist beers and whatnot everywhere, though they tend to be fairly expensive.

There's a number of American breweries that put out Belgian style ales that are frankly almost, if not as, good as the stuff you get across the pond, such as Ommegang and Allagash.

But the price point is the real issue. Imported stuff is like $20+ a 4-pack, while domestic stuff is like 1/2 the price. What do you go for, something that's a 10/10 for double the price, or something that's 9.5/10 for half the price?

IPA's are common here, but only a handful are actually good - and those that are are worth trying. The stout game in the US is one point though. We're
Mostly lacking in terms of more nuanced and lighter stuff like Wit's and Hefe's, though we're learning. Gose's are strangely popular here.

Spiced beer and flavorful adjuncts were the norm in Germany and the rest of Europe until regulations were pushed by big Bavarian brewers to 'ensure quality' (read: control the market). It pushed perfectly good styles like fruit and spiced beers to the brink of extinction, while doing piss-all to stop macro-brewers from brewing inferior product. And to add insult to injury, the current rules aren't even the same as those drawn up in 1516, which introduced even more loopholes and arbitrary contradictions, none of which benefit drinkers.

Europeans brew good beer in spite of, not because of, 'purity laws', and even then they have lost decades of knowledge that Americans are only too eager to rediscover.
