i'm in rural georgia with very little craft beer
went to a bar that didn't sell liquor and asked for a beer with a high alcohol content
tasted no different to me than 211 but came to find out they charged 7 dollars a pop for these retarded ipas
yeah some ipas taste pretty good but the reason craft beer has taken off isn't because they're great but because they're extremely marketable
alcohol as a class symbol is fucking stupid in general though

Unless you don't have any friends anon. If you're that bitter about life and people having more things than you I encourage you to do some meditation and think about where your life went wrong that you're complaining about skillfully executed, well thought out beverages over the internet.

There's nothing about OP's "point" that stands up either historically or with respect to the people brewing mead today. It's just once again, a basement dwelling individual who hates the fact that people are breaking away from the garbage food and drink culture perpetuated by mega corporations since WWII. Individual creativity, competition and choice are now an evil in the Land of Megacorporate Freedom. 30 years ago, there were only a handful of people in the US that even knew what mead was. A lot of IPAs are bitter and that's it. Properly made IPAs include the hops later in the brewing process so that the intricate flavors are extracted instead of the just the vegetal bitterness. I haven't had a torpedo in like 2 years so i don't remember how that one really is. Nonetheless, there are definitely IPAs that taste like glasses of orange and lime juice with no bitterness. It's just such a trendy and popular style of beer now, that many breweries don't execute it well. However, plenty of people do like tongue scraper west coast IPAs for their bitterness.

Most of them are pandering to people who think "more hops + more bitter = more good". Some people only drink them to show how bitter of a drink they can consume, which is the only thing that makes someone a tryhard. If you legitimately enjoy something then drink it and it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

There are two kinds of bitterness though. One is just a bitter flavor but it mostly stays in your mouth and it doesn't create the "this is bad, get it out of your mouth" reaction. The other kind makes your stomach feel bitter. Most IPA's seem to be the latter. I've had one IPA that was drinkable and pleasant though, you just have to find one that's made by people who want to make a good IPA and not ones who just want to cram as much bitterness and hops as possible into a bottle.

Sometimes I forget why I, like most people, have a negate attitude towards mead, then I remember guys like this I used to know in college, who have to make every alcoholic beverage into an autistic renfaire cosplay act.

That, and the fact that mead just isn't very good.

Although in complete fairness I sometimes order tej at the Ethiopian place which I suppose is probably the equivalent of going for Sushi while dressed as Yojimbo and screaming "頂きます" at the waiter. But I have been to Japan whereas I have yet to visit Ethiopia, so I don't feel quite as ridiculous being culturally oblivious, although I probably should.

having tej with ethiopian food makes sense though--that'd be like having a german beer with a sausage and sauerkraut or any other combo of a culture's food+drink

>> No.9135405

Does it though? I mean certainly in Germany that combo is expected, but by no means an everyday food in modern life (except if you're some Bavarian yokel), but in some countries alcohol and dining isn't necessarily a given. For all I know tej is something reserved for men drinking in shady drinking dens. Like the way Mexicans traditionally drink pulque. But I like to project my own relationship with alcohol on other cultures, so even if it's a ridiculous combo, as long as I'm oblivious I'll make the pairing until I find out otherwise.

That doesn't narrow things down much.

The thing about fruit wines is that fruits contain a vastly more complex chemistry than honey, which is literally just concentrated sugar syrup. There are acids, there are tannins from the skin and the seeds and (in the case of grape wine at least) the stems. The sugar to acid balance is determined by grape farming choices and by the wine making process itself. The amount of other chemicals in the wine is determined by how the fruit is crushed or macerated, pressed, whether it's de-stemmed, and so on. A well balanced wine contains just the right amount of this and that. Sugar and ethanol being just part of the picture.

Whereas honey might retain some faint aromas and flavors from the flower and basically what you've got is 100% sugar and 0% acid. So you get to choose how much sugar and how much alcohol, and that's about it? I suppose you could dump malic acid or tartaric acid in, like winemakers do when they're dealing with substandard product? Which is really what honey is. A substandard product with which to make a beverage.

I imagine you must mean mead resembles a shitty mass-market wine consisting of powdered adjuncts and run through as many microfiltration and reverse osmosis steps as necessary to eliminate any evidence that it actually came from a substandard ingredient.

Since you're not dealing with third-rate fruit I guess you eliminate some steps. Let the bees sort it out?

There must be some reason people choose to live in slave states. Around here that's a can of PBR in a dive bar, but at least I don't have any ((economic anxiety)) so I don't mind $13 for a drinkable beverage at bars.

This is the most obnoxiously pretentious drink I've sen in my life.

The fact you can be ok with that staggers me. This is, in every meaning of the phrase, trying too hard to make a good drink.

I love ipas, but I have to agree with you. It seems like east coast isn't as guilty of it, but specifically California and the mid west are creating just more and more bitter ipas without giving them any depth of flavor.

That's the whole reason for it, the depth ipas can provide. Instead its all this single note "how elitist can I make this? "

>end rant

The east coast brewing scene has a lot more representation of traditional european styles - for instance locally brewed belgian style beers are particularly popular in the NY area, as well as actual imported belgian beers. We get a lot of the lighter more balanced central european style beers too, made with either "authentic" old world hops or new world style hops, but generally reflecting a more drinkable profile aimed at people who aren't preoccupied with "proving" that they're not drinking pleb pisswater. The closest thing to a generic run-of-the-mill beer bar in NYC tends to focus heavily on belgian stuff, rather than DIPAs and x-treem naga jholokia chocolate espresso bourbon stout.

I suspect part of this has to do with the general lack of food culture in the midwest, for instance the way their pizza is just loaded up with random heaps of frozen garbage (shitty sausage, canned olives, jalapenos, tater tots, and so on) because they can't fathom a more minimalist approach where the quality and freshness of the ingredients carries the dish. This tendency towards extreme application of crude flavors spills over into the drinking culture as their palates aren't calibrated for nuance. And also of course, the fact that obesity is a serious problem in those parts of the US, and despite the fact that they have to drive for an hour to get anywhere at all, this doesn't seem to stop them from being out of control alcoholics. So a couple of 11% ABV beers in the middle of the day is not something they'd even hesitate at. It doesn't impact their productivity or energy levels because they're so used to getting winded from walking to the fridge. Feeling tired and drained is just "normal" to them.

I've been to Surly in Minnesota, Great Lakes in Ohio, and Goose Island in Chicago. I'm well aware that there are breweries that physically offer more balanced beer styles. But what do you see the locals getting excited over. It's not the Great Lakes Dortmunder. It's the Edmund Fitzgerald. It's not the Surly Hell, it's the Overrated.

I mean we've got stuff like that in the Northeast too, and people like it, but if you ask someone to pick a beer to represent the local scene they're more likely to pick an Ommegang Hennepin or something along those lines.

>> No.9144016

Never tried that kind, how sweet is it? For me, mead has to be super dry. When brewing I add just enough sugar that all the sweetness ferments out.

>It's not the Surly Hell, it's the Overrated.
I think you mean Furious, overrated isn't that good and is much less popular than Furious. Furious is pretty good and much maltier than IPA you would typically find in the rest of the country. I think your whole premise is off though, I just had Surly Eleven yesterday, a nice Brett wheat quad, pretty sure my liquor store sold their entire allotment quite quickly
People all over America love IPA because it is great, but if you like other styles too the Midwest is obviously the place to be with the best local variant of IPA and the widest selection of less common Euro styles and barrel aged stuff. The Northeast is good too, there just aren't as many good breweries there yet as they started getting into top tier beer much later, but they have certainly surpassed the West coast in all but volume now

Fuck you cider can be amazing. As is beer, some mead, some wine, some IPAs, as are liqueurs and spirits... And the guy is right, if the people behind them want to make a good beer and not play into some fad perpetuated by shitlords, they end up with good beer. The longer I read this thread the more I realise how much I hate insecure Americans arguing which fad is better than the next, just fucking enjoy your drinks.

Every good booze has a shit equivalent in its class and its all relative to your taste, for me:

Good lagers (this list could be endless): Tyskie, Corona, Staropramen, Bud (high drinkability, you can knock them back like fuck); Bad lagers: Holsten, Heineken,

Good cider: Aspell, Angry Orchard, Thatchers; Bad cider: Strongbow, literally any white cider or cider made by a company known for producing beer. Some microbrews taste like arse and smell like socks, haven't had a proper good one.

Good vodkas: Zubrowka (only with apple or tomato juice), Wyborowa, Finlandia, Grey Goose, my grandpa's moonshine; Bad vodkas: Smirnoff, Bols, Korn

Good Fruit vodkas (moonshine): all sorts of palinkas, slivovitz, ciraq; Bad ones: grappa

Good whisky: Monkey's Shoulder, Jura; Bad whisky: Teachers, Glenfiddich, JD, cheap shit.

My fave wine would be pretty much anything from northern Italy, haven't had a bad glass when I was travelling there, and I'm usually quite picky. Bad wine: most of the stuff in supermarkets sadly...

Mead is great to get fucked on the cheap and listen to music with friends. I swear it tastes like your favourite pornstars pussy after the 3rd bottle.

Also, if you haven't, Campari and OJ, a handful of ice cubs and you have yourself a beautiful afternoon in the sun (i sometimes drink it in clubs just for a change from boring shit like vodka and cokes).

TL;DR Different drinks attract their own shitlords. You're all becoming shitcunts for trying to discern which drink's shitlords are the worst.

Good ales: Cwrw Braf, Old Peculier, Doombar, Guiness (stout, i know) lots and lots of others, literally most ales have something good you can say about them, except for the Bad ales: Newcastle Brown and some other Nigel Farage type watery bullshit, usually local to the pub's area.
