What is it about the californa roll that's so addictive? Why has this roll of rice, fake crab meat, and avocado dominated over the western sushi scene with little to no competition? Why is it so good?

I like a great deal of sushi. Traditional nigiri, hand rolls, and even a lot of the Americanized rolls. But the California roll? That shit sucks.

I don't think it's good at all. But it is ubiquitious, and you'll find it at any Westernized sushi place. I consider it "sushi for people who don't like sushi". Boring, bland, inoffensive flavors. And no raw fish that might upset the squeamish.

Anyway, if you like 'em then eat 'em! But personally I find them off-putting.

I don't know why most people seem to prefer them, they're vastly inferior to even a basic spicy tuna roll. My guess is it's more popular because flyovers are scared shitless of raw fish, and California rolls don't have that along with a much less exotic name.

I'm kind of curious where this "most people seem to prefer them" thing comes from.

Sure, you see them on every menu and they often come in combo meals, but have you ever actually seen someone order them?

I often go out for sushi, either with friends or co-workers. The people range from sushi snobs through people who really don't care for it all that much. I've never seen any of them order a California roll. All kinds of other rolls? Yes. Nigiri? Yes. Sashimi? Sure. Various other Japanese foods that aren't sushi? Of course. But I've never actually seen anyone order a California roll.

it's good because sense it's not real sushi it keeps well and is decent for a fast grab and go snack anytime.
Rice and seaweed is a pretty tasty snack just on it's own.
A lot of Californians fell for the 'sushi is fancy and expensive meme' when really in japan a lot of places serve it fast and cheap, almost like fast food.
So when your choice is between a California roll served by that cutey highschooler vs having to dress up and pay $15+ for each small bite fish being served by dressed up japanese men with frowns on their faces, for fish that is not as good as street bar places in japan, you get an emotional connection with the California roll.

If you prefer cali rolls over any maki roll with actual fish youre a faggot of the highest caliber

Sweet krab surimi, fresh cucumber, sour (rice) and creamy from avocados = a combination just flavorful enough to be a stepping stone for bland western palates. I don't mind California rolls, but when I want sushi I often want the whole package, not something you can get at the gas station.

Also, Cali rolls are a good way for people who hate the idea of eating raw fish to sound cultured and trendy when they say they 'want to go eat sushi'. They're the chicken tendies of sushi.

Because cream cheese and imitation crab taste amazing. Have you ever had a crab rangoon? Sure its white af but its tasty.

You want real sushi go for some sashimi with japanese raddish. that goes hard

As someone who lives in Japan, I see people mixing wasabi with soy all the fucking time. Pic related is an ad for wasabi flavored soy sauce.

I'm so tired of all these rules of propriety everyone thinks the Japanese are neurotically fastidious about. These rumors are perpetuated by Japanese who moved west in the 80s, and continued acting the same while their country moved on. I believed them too until I moved here.

California rolls are on the menu, mayonaisu is on everything, and some nigiri even has cheese on it. Sushi has an elaborate culture to it, sure, but this is only at the properly fine dining establishments. Being all proper at your average sushi dive is about as ridiculous as asking for a salad fork at Mcdonalds.
