it's weird that this is the only widely available plain cereal. it's still selling, so obviously people like it.

why not shredded rice? shredded oats? shredded corn? shredded barley?

Cheerios, rice crispies, and chex are all plain and quite good. Corn flakes and wheaties are close to plain, just a light touch of sugar

Shredded wheat became popular in Britain and America during the Second World War. Shredded wheat was considered healthier than the other, sugarier breakfast cereals of the day and so it took up less points on the ration book. It was thus associated with being a healthfag ever after.
