Garbage masquerading as a "good deal". There is a reason you only see 18-25 millennials shopping there, they have no life skills and think "cooking" means chopping up some onions to throw in the instant ramen. A few packs of freezer burned Chinese tilapia is like serious gastronomic exploration for these people, and maybe some shit-tier farmed salmon where the flesh is like 5% dead worms by weight.

The "wine" is made out of fourth-rate arsenic-laden fruit, chemically adulterated and run through as many stages of ultra-filtration, micro-oxygenation and other processes to suppress the most unpleasant flavors and turn it into a sort of alcoholic version of Kraft Singles.

Absolutely disgusting, Aldi-tier trash store, which fools the naive into thinking it's something good by putting panda bears on its house-brand stale cereal that tastes like the stuff Newegg packs computer parts in.

I live Uptown Manhattan and going to Trader Joe's is a pain in the ass, but everything I get there is excellent quality for usually less than the surrounding grocery stores. Is Fairway any less expensive than TJ's? I've always avoided the word 'gourmet' since moving to NYC because that's code word for "expensive." I live in Harlem near the Hospital on 135th, and I only shlepp down to TJ's like only 1-2 times a month. I usually shop at my neighborhood Associated because it's right at the bottom of my building, but usually the produce selection is so-so.

I buy my meat in bulk at Costco and portion it out to either freeze or grind into sausages or regular meat, and sometimes I go to the butcher for a fancier cut for when there's company.

>> No.8919720

Their produce is always terrible.
I've had potatoes go bag just a few days after buying them. And I don't even bother looking at their strawberries anymore, just looking at the packages at the store it's hard find ones that aren't growing mold.

Everything else is pretty damn good though.

Not really sure what your question is. You're praying for a Whole Foods and wondering if Fairway is expensive?

The advantage of Fairway over WF is that the produce selection is cheaper. Fairway also caters to a lot of Jews who are, naturally Jews about their meat. You can get some alright chicken garbage parts for stock and stuff at Fairway for cheaper than WF. The coffee selection at WF is better (Grumpy and Irving and so on). The bulk grains and nuts and legumes is also better and cheaper at WF. WF has a better selection of raw milk cheeses. If you are looking more at cheaper cheeses, Fairway wins for selection and quality. The fish is probably a tossup. Pre-made foods, WF wins. Fairway has some good bulk generic olive oils but I've never found any Palestinian olive oil, like they have at WF. WF has occasional sales on fitness stuff (proteins, supplements, etc) which Fairway never does. Fairway has a better selection of lox and sable and that kind of thing. The bakeries at both are gross.

The meat section at the TJ near me is terrible. High fucking prices for garbage. No skin on or bone in chicken so I have to part or roast a whole bird myself. Also, I don't know if their refrigeration is busted, but all the packages meats are just brimming with liquids.

No, I'm saying that Whole foods would be convenient for me when it opens because it'd be 7 blocks away from my building. I only shlepp down to TJ's because it gives me fancy produce and things I can't get from my Associated. If I need a particular ingredient or something I can't really get at my little store I'd have to go down to TJ's (or if I really can't find it, a WF somewhere.)

I was mostly asking if Fairway would be a replacement for me going to TJ's because the lines/crowds there are stupid. WF isn't really the same thing to me as TJ's, and it isn't convenient to where I live (along the 2&3) so it being on 125th would make it reasonable.
I don't really get meat/seafood at either place. I live next to a fish market, and I get my meat from Costco/butcher. And as for bread, if I can't be bothered baking my own, I just get the cheap/pleb stuff at the Associated.

I never know if I am expected to bag my own groceries at TJ's. At most other grocerty stores I go to, the cashier bags stuff as they go, but they almost never do that at TJ's, so they ring everything up and then bag it.
