Germanfag here. Been drinking and enjoying beer for nine years, ever since I was 14. Ther were phases when I enjoyed mixed beer drinks; there were times I enjoyed trashy sellout big brand beer. There were times when I used it primarily to get drunk. But at all times, I genuinely enjoyed it for its taste and effect. It's definitely an acquired taste, OP. The bitterness combined with the alcohol mouth feel turns a lot of people off at first, but in the end once you get used to it, it's fine. If you are a man and don't like beer, don't drink it.

Beer is just so convenient though, every bar has it. I used to be an apple cider type of dude, until I developed a taste for beer, and now I can't stand cider. The closest thing you'd be able to find outside of the oktoberfest period would be a Vienna style lager. Marzen developed from that style. I don't know of any microbrews making it but surely there are some. Strangely enough though, the mexican beer Negro Modelo is a Vienna style lager.

I wouldn't touch most English beer with a ten metre pole but most Belgian beer usually has more of a sweet taste to it and doesn't actually taste like shit
