Cast iron is cheap. It's good for frying and searing stuff. Less good for other things. You buy it because it's cheap and useful, not because it's the best choice in cookware.

Ok.

You're investing $12 in a pan that works on every cook top including a pit fire or an oven. A pan that you will never break without amazing levels of stupidity. You can use it to keep cooking once it's hot well past taking it away from the heat source since it retains heat so well.

Its not all purpose. Its not idiot proof. It's just tough.
