What do you order when you go to a mexican restaurant?

I usually get something in a tortilla with rice and beans on the side

Depends on what the place does well. If I'm at a place that specializes in tortas that's what I'm getting. If their thing is Al Pastor tacos that will be my order. If they're known for their ceviche, birria or barbacoa then I'll get that. If antojitos are their thing I won't even order a meal, just get a bunch of apps and a beer. I generally don't just go to random Mexican places and pick random shit off the menu, because the last thing I want is mediocrity with a side of rice and refried beans.

Sometimes places are named after what they specialize in. The place in my neighborhood that does the best tortas is called Tortas a la Plancha Don Pepe, and the best taco place is called Tacos El Bronco. Then there's visual cues. If the place has a gyro machine in prominent view it's a safe bet they put a fair bit of attention on their Al Pastor. If many of the patrons are eating tamales, huraches, tlayudas or sopes chances are that's the way to go. Also if I have the time to do a little research before deciding on a place I do.

I went to a mexican restaurant and if its your birthday they come and sing and yell UNO DOS TRES TEQUILA! and a guy takes a bottle of tequila and pours some in your mouth

over the course of dinner I watched this happen 5 times, 5 different people from different parties, all of which put their mouths on a bottle and probably backwashed into it before the next unsuspecting customer was given a sip

I expect shit like that from the chinese, but I really thought mexicans were better than that. Wall just got ten feet higher

I went to a Mexican restaurant on my birthday and got a carne asada taco and chicken in mole poblano. It was delicious.
