Teriyaki is basically not a thing in Japan except strangely enough foreign chains that have a Japanese item on the menu. Yakitori sauce is fairly similar but definitely different and not as sweet

I lived in Tokyo for a few years and never once saw teriyaki anything on a menu that wasn't something like the Teriyaki burger at McD. I asked about it and was told that teriyaki was Japanese but wasn't very common and the most popular chicken with a sweet sauce was yakitori which was decidedly different
