Does this even do anything?

Yeh it serves two purposes. One is a drinking vessel, the other is something you can shove up your ass

The glencairn glass? I really like them. Easier to smell the whisky, and for some reason when I let it sit in one for a few minutes before drinking I find it needs less water and it is easier to pick out more flavours.

Could all be pretentious red herring nonsense, but I like it.

Yeah, snifter glasses are an ideal choice for drinking straight-up alcohol. Most of the time, people who are into the large whiskey or brandy scene love to smell the alcohol first before tasting.

isolates the vapor column so you can better pick out the flavors (even though there are none and literally every whiskey is just ethanol with old wood seeped in)

Whisky is predominantly grain juice, with a bit of wood soaked in. The other 40% is ethanol.

Grain is the main flavour of whisky.

I have a hard time experiencing a huge difference between different glasses. It goes for both beer and whisky. For example I feel no difference between an ale in a snifter or in an oversized wine glass. Still nice to have some decent glasses I guess.

it's ideal for smelling whisky because of the shape

the taste of brandy in particular is considered best and most "intense" when it's well aired and at least room temperature
the flame is needed to make convection happen, which permits a bigger quantity of liquid to be properly aired

Wrong. Smoke is the main flavour of whiskey.
