Yes! The meat is cooked through the vegetable with the bun on top and covered so it also absorbs the vegetable steam. King's Hawaiian mini buns are perfect. I've pretty much got White Castle beat with my method now so I'm thinking of testing out some other vegetables besides/in addition to onions. Maybe something like slaw.
