>Why is the best kind of chinese takeaway the cheap shitty stuff?
Egg foo young. It's got plenty of mushrooms, crisp bean sprouts, green onion. It's made fresh, and isn't even bad for you.
Or moo goo gai pan.
Either one gives you some calories to spend on an indulgent appetizer, or maybe some pork fried rice.

If there is a traditional chinese menu, oh, I'll get a soup special, the eggplant, or pork with preserved mustard greens, maybe a salt and pepper item.

It takes a GOOD takeaway to make great honey chicken, or a sizzling tenderloin canton steak, or even sweet and sour pork. This is where the better cuts matter. I like things like General Tsao's or King Pao but I think I make certain recipes better myself, less cheap with the nuts ;) If I don't have to do Chinese, I don't. I prefer all other asian choices for choices because of fresh herbs. Dim Sum is nice, though.

>> No.8446823

It's not. I have a Zagat rated Sichuan joint near my house that makes a-maz-ing food and I get take out all the time that would make baby jesus get up and sing.
>looking at you, Old Sichuan Chicken

Despite everything I'd read which started the contrary, dog is in fact delicious.

If I had to pick something that it tastes like, I'd say "steak flavour" like you get on chips or snacks, very "meaty".

Would definitely order dog if it became common on our menus.

Yep. I'm a foremost expert on all things Chinese takeout, and the General Tsao + 4 orders of crab rangoons is the only way I roll. In fact, sometimes I just order a shit ton of rangoons and nothing else. Any true connoisseur of Chinese buffet culture will corroborate.

I went to the place next to my job once a week or so for 2 years. It wasn't great but it hit the spot. There was another place across the street but it was attached to a gas station so I assumed it was nasty. I went there one time and paid less money, got twice as much food, and the food was infinitely fresher and better prepared. $5.75 for lunch and dinner and somehow their rice doesn't get disgusting when it's been chilled and reheated which is a major plus. I've been going there ever since and every other time they even give me a free egg roll. Sometimes you have to take a chance.

Because the cheap shit is loaded with salt and sugar, which are addictive, and the stuff that isn't cheap and shitty are generally served banquet-style, tableside, and/or are not very good as leftovers. Everyone love reheated General Tso's. But who wants reheated shark fin soup, or bird's nests, or suckling pig with jellyfish? Who wants takeout hotpot?

>>8446810
>Egg foo young
This. It's such a good, filling dish. It's one of the dishes I use to judge a Chinese takeout place. Because it's basically an omelette, and if the chef fucks it up or doesn't care, you know the rest of the food is going to be mediocre.
