It won't change the flavor if that's what you're most excited about.

Personally, I like bourbon in my eggnog. Other whiskeys are good too. Rum works, whether dark or light, but I'd avoid the spiced and/or coconut flavors. Brandy is possibly the most "classic" add in. A coworker of mine swears by Bailey's Irish Cream in her eggnog.

I like my homemade eggnog without bourbon so I can know if it needs anything or would benefit from a different type of liquor. It always is perfect and I always use bourbon. But it's nice to have a small cold glass with nothing in it to know how amazing it is.
