What's the absolute best burger you've ever had, and where was it?

Take some time to really consider. Close your eyes, relax, and think it over.

...the only thing that could have used improvement was the bun. I had just plain 'ol store-bought buns. They were OK but I feel that a really nice potato-bread or brioche bun would have taken it to the next level.

In my kitchen.

Patty: Short rib meat, freshly ground just before forming the patties. Seasoned with S&P & cooked in an iron skillet. Seared crust on the outside of the patty, "medium" inside.

Toppings:
Homemade beer-battered onion rings (vidalia onions)
Kraft single x 2 (I am a cheese snob, but goddamn it if these aren't perfect for a cheeseburger.)
Benton's bacon
Homemade pickles with dill & garlic
Homemade spicy BBQ-garlic sauce

Buns toasted in the bacon drippings

The buns themselves were the only thing that could have been improved upon. I had pretty basic buns from the local supermarket bakery. However a potato-bread or brioche bun would have been better, IMHO.

it's like you want e coli or something. ground beef isn't like a steak where the bacteria doesn't penetrate beyond the first few centimeters of the cut, that shit's all mixed in.

I would never eat a fast food burger anything but well done. But in a good restaurant where they carefully source the meat? Anything further than med rare is a crime. It's all a matter of whether or not you can trust the place. Korzo happens to be a place I trust.

Black Rose Pub in Hendersonville, NC.
Best damn burgers in the tri-county area.

My go-to was a simple burger, named the "Politically Ambiguous" burger.
>sauteed farm-to-table portabellas
>caramelized onions
>swiss cheese
>locally farmed angus beef

>$9.49

Everything is sourced locally, and as simple as their burgers are, it's the meat that does the talking.

Little place on the southwest coast of bongland called like Dinosaur Drive-in or something

I was half-asleep due to having just driven like ten uninterrupted hours down from Scotland. I was expecting garbage, but I needed food or I was gonna die, so I pulled into this rustic looking place with a neon sign straight out of the 80s, and they blew my fucking mind.

Ok I guess you don't know how it works, I won't accost you for ignorance. When you cook a burger it gets heated throughout, meat being brown is not indicative of lack of bacteria. As long as the middle of a burger is heated to a high enough temperature then it is safe to eat.

I honestly think it all depends on how hungry you are when you eat a good cheeseburger. The top three I can think of are the Camden Club at Oriole Park (now gone). Some little dive in Ocean City, MD called The Talbot Street cafe or something like that (now gone). The best ever was some bar just south of New York City that I can't remember the name of or the name of the town it was in.

All three of these I had not eaten all day and was extremely hungry.

I'm a big fan of the Lola burger at B Spot in Cleveland (and I think one of Symon's closed restaurants). Cook it on the rarish side of medium, with pickled red onions, cheddar, bacon and a sunnyside-up egg. Press the bun down so the egg yolk starts to run out over the rest of the burger. Mmm. Honestly, I'm a sucker for any burger with a runny egg on top.

I also really like the burger au poivre at Heck's Cafe. Again, not cooked higher than medium, with fresh cracked peppercorns, grilled onions, Worcestershire sauce and sour cream.
