Where did the meme of bad British food come from?

I've heard that it's because during the war (and after) there were a lot of food rationing, restrictions goods like butter and sugar especially so. This nit only made food taste pretty bland, but US and Allied soldiers stationed in Britain ate that bland food and brought that impression back home.

I don't know how much of that is true, but British food is pretty delicious in my opinion, at least when you don't restrict the use of sugar and butter.

I really wish it was easier to find authentic British cuisine in the US. Even in large cities you just don't find 'English restaurants' like you do traditional Italian, Spanish, or French. You get the odd 'Irish pub' that serves some staples in half-assed bar-food fashion, which I suppose carries its own sort of authenticity, but there's basically nothing (that I've found) attempting to replicate the sort of home cooking I had when I lived there.
Maybe it's different in the north-east?

As you are aware, Home cooking is different to quality restaurant fare.

Basic Brit grub can be found in most Pubs and 'Irish Pubs' in the US are basically theme pubs, that serve nothing different to Mainland Britain, if anything it's worse.

British cuisine has long had a history of pie-making and the only other countries that seem to eat savoury pies is Australia.

Supermarkets have killed off a lot of our cuisine and stuff like Rabbit stew, Jugged Hare, Snails in cider, etc. have taken a back-seat unless you catch and cook it yourself.

Remember that Mac and cheese, Apple Pie, Poutine, etc. are actually British foods too?

I recently tried making roast potatoes British-style , and it's fucking amazing. Crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. Better than fries. I wouldn't roast my potatoes this way every time (skin-on is the best roast potato), but it's definitely worth adding to your repertoire.

Here is my wife's recipe:
Boil some eggs.
As they are boiling, grate some stale bread. For breadcrumbs.
Put some sausage meat around the eggs.
Put breadcrumbs around them.
Fry. If shallow frying, turn often.
If deep frying then 2 minutes will do.

It's easy and delicious.
