Actually true. In the 19th century and before, the grand estates of Britain, Russia and Germany brewed their own estate beer. They would sparge the grain once for the household strong ale (something like a barleywine) which would age for a year, a second sparge for the everyday household beer, and a third sparge for the peasants or servants. The third sparge was called "small beer" and quite weak in alcohol. One of the reasons this was done had to do with the notion that the lower classes couldn't be trusted with higher alcohol level beverages. After all, with relaxed inhibitions, they might revolt.

True, that part was my own tongue-in-cheek interpretation. The real reason is probably because they had a shitload of manual labor to do, beer was the standard hydrating refreshment and if it had a higher percent of alcohol they wouldn't have been as effective or safe at their work.

I don't have the exact stats at my fingertips, but I remember reading the average peasant on a large estate doing field work in the 18th century would drink at least 4 or 5 litres of small beer a day.

Revolver Bock, it's amazing. I live in Texas and it's a local brew. Usually sells out at grocery stores wherever it is sold at. And it's 6.5% abv. Great alternative to Shiner Bock. A little pricey but hey I like it.

Revolver also has Blood and Honey. Not as good as the Bock IMO but I would recommend that one too. It's 7% abv.

The real reason everyone drank beer is because the boiling process sanitized the water, killed waterborne diseases and thus made it safe to drink. Obviously, as it was the primary drink it wouldn't make sense to make it strong as no one would be able to go about their daily lives properly. There are also other reasons that could contribute to the relative weakness of the beer which are probably due to lack of understanding of the brewing process and inability to measure sugar content, temperatures etc back in the day.

Since when was 19th century Britain occurring at the same time as Medieval Britain? Water became much more polluted in the 18th/19th centuries due to the increase in population which led to a rise in effluent finding its way into water sources (what is cholera) and the rise of industry which would also pollute the drinking water. Thus, boiling the water was a means of sterilizing and sanitizing this water and making it into weak beer probably just seemed like a good, cheap idea. The elite had their own version with tea, but obviously this was far too expensive for your average person in the street. There's plenty of stuff on how deadly the drinking water was during the industrial revolution and contiguous consumption of beer and other alcohols.

>> No.8256433

Forgot to mention, hops and alcohol also act as preservatives so it would've enabled the people who drank said beer to make a large batch every once in a while and store it, rather than having to constantly boil water and let it cool down and drink before it became stagnant.

Drinking a Wychwood Christmas beer, hoping that what I've got conditioning right now turns out half as good.

In early December, I should have 10gal of some 8%-ish, mildly citrusy, clove-hinting, auburn, gingered saison... basically going for a serious Christmas beer.

I used a bit of Galaxy hops late in the boil to try to give a less-piney citrus, hopefully offset by a warm-ish secondary on a high-phenol-bearing Saison yeast and the reasonably high percentage of Caramel60... it could just shit the bed too. I'll have to wait and see.
