I'm thinking Rum, Whisky, Gin or Vodka.

Which is the most affordable for someone on a budget?
Which one is best (taste / balance / mouthfeel)?
Which one do you prefer?

Personal preferences aside, hardcore alcoholics almost always end up on vodka. Little to no taste, simple, gets the job done with no bullshit. Less hangover than darker liquors.

Google Congeners

I'm not an alcoholic, so which spirit is best taste-wise?

So far I prefer Gin, but I haven't really explored the others.

Rum is the most affordable. You can get a 12 year old rum for $25-$30 if you know where to shop. I like El Dorado 12 (Guyana) for drinking by itself, Coruba (Jamaica) for Planter's Punch, Panama Pacific 9 for Daiquiris, and Appleton Extra (Jamaica) for Mai Tais

Rum is one of the most flavorful ones besides gin

Gin has a lot of flavor, yep. Other people like Whiskies, for some reason. I Never did, but some people love their Scotch and Bourbon.

$6 at your local mart

I have yet to find a better alcohol content to price value than this

I personally like whisky (bourbon and scotch specifically) because I find the flavors quite complex. I haven't found a good sipping rum yet, I tried the 8yo El Dorado and it was meh. Vodka is usually straight forward and boring to me, gin can either be really bad or really good depending on the bottle and the producer. Boodle's and Sipsmith's are nice but expensive. Best cheap one is probably Bombay.

1. Vodka. You can buy a bottle of VERY good vodka for a price of shittiest scotch. Caution - NEVER try to drink it "raw", like the single malt whiskey. Mix it with juice/cola. Drink a shot of it and gulp down with juice/cola. Bring appetisers (salted cucumbers is an undying classic).
2.3 Rum, probably. However, my friends like scotch whiskey more.

I'm weird, i went from vodka to whiskey. Can't deal with the smell of vodka anymore. I also prefer Coke as a chaser, rather than sprite with vodka.

if you like super sugary crap dissolve hard candy in everclear beware though first time i came across this i thought it was just Kool-aid chugged a glass no alcohol flavor. later that night i was on all fours in the garden trying to remember how to breathe.
