I don't think Yelp is useful for the scores it gives, but the text of reviews can be very useful, along with the photos. Especially the Tips section of each page.

Also, I think if a place is noticeably lower than the trend (usually 4 stars) of the area, it's a sign something is off.

When I searched for worst, it actually gave some of the best restaurants in the city.

Top result was an Italian place I go to routinely, pic related, second result was a high-end place that's booked months in advance.

Took me like 5 pages to find a place with consistently bad reviews and it was one of our two Steak and Shakes. Also passed this placed with okay reviews but I've been there and it's insanely overpriced with at best average food.

I had their nachos when I was there and the cheese is pretty much the same as the shit you'd get on gas station nachos. All the toppings were like straight out of a can/package too.

You gotta question the validity of college students. I live close to a college - it took me a while to find anything under three stars. And even then, the one that I found was at a 24 hour diner. Like, how good do you expect food at a 24 hour classic diner to be? That's kind of the charm.

One-star rated Cuban joint, apparently under new ownership.

>A group of coworkers and I checked this place out for taco Tuesday, and boy were we disappointed. We had come before and they had great tacos and deals. This was not the case this time I guess it's now Cuban but still offered tacos. When they arrived the flavor was ok, but yeah had about 1 teaspoon of oil, and the kicker was the bill they charged $5 per taco, and $12 for a chicken quesadilla which didn't even come with sour cream or salsa. I just can't believe they charged more money for a single taco than for a Cuban sandwich

Looks pretty shitty to me too.
