Jokes aside, I was bemused Murricans have a serious problem with food deserts. I never even knew the term "food desert" before.

A side effect of being so reliant on the personal automobile. If you don't have reliable access to a car, the places you can go are extremely limited.

I don't know man. There were shops, they just didn't carry any greens. Other places either had extremely expensive, poor choice and poor quality ones. I'm not saying you can't buy greens (there are places that have a great selection). But when I was visiting and offered to cook, finding ingredients relatively close was a challenge. After a few times (in different places) we just prepared in advance (as we should from the start).

It's mind boggling because right now, late September I have access to three small private shops, each with a selection of greens; two different guys selling fresh vegetables out of their cars five days a week (3 minute walk, at the crossroads) and a whole food market six bus stops from home.
Not counting supermarkets, franchises etc.

Shit's fucked up.

America is a unique place where there are two coasts and fuckall in between. Certain places never build the infrastructure to get fresh food, since it all goes to the coasts. This doesn't really happen in other places since they don't have the same kind of population dispersion/geography.
