The "thinking man's" soda is one that you won't find in a store, but must get made fresh in a cafe -- Italian sodas. You get some sort of flavored syrup, like strawberry or vanilla, add ice and club soda, optionally add whipped cream and half and half, and call it a day. Not all cafes carry them, but enough of them do, and it is worth looking around town to see which ones will short you on the syrup or do a poor job of stirring the damn thing, and which ones know how to make it right.

Of course, you could make one at home, but I'd say it's not quite the same experience.

We all have to have one poison in life. I don't do drugs, I don't smoke cigarettes or even drink much of any alcohol. If I'm going to have one thing to slowly kill me, it's going to be soda.

Ginger Ale
Fresca

I think these two pretty much sum up any kind of soda a "thinking man" would drink.

If we're being honest with ourselves here though, the real "thinking man's" soda is probably gin or whiskey
