A pourover cone goes a long way if you can be bothered to play around with the ratios, grind size and temperature. Quicker to make than a FP. More through extraction than a FP. Paper filter so there wont be any fines in the coffee. In the winters you can do a hot pourover. In the summer you can do a japanese ice pourover. Clean up = throwing away paper filter full of coffee

The biggest problem with it would be... Steeper learning curve. And the paper tends to absorb some of the oils from the coffee. But at the end of the day it all boils down to the kind of coffee you like drinking.

I was somewhat surprised when I discovered this. Makes sense, in hindsight. Also, some beans are easier to grind (have a manual one), but luckily I don't need to adjust that

Not that guy but with headphones, not including the source equipment, diminishing returns set in quickly past $300 or so. By the time you reach about $1500, anything more than that is just paying for bling. Those trophy cans like the Orpheus are expensive because they only made like 20 of them and everything is made of extinct dodo bird beaks and shit

With speakers it's a bit trickier to put numbers on these things because room response is such a large part of the equation, so do you count DSPs or active crossovers or bass traps, etc. You kind of have to consider the whole system, more so than with headphones where you can mix and match. But $10k isn't all that crazy of a number since you have to move so much more air.

With the horribly mastered garbage recordings people listen to, none of this matters anyway. There are probably no more than 500 commercial albums out there that are good enough to merit $1500 headphones or $10k speaker setups.

none of which are really any better than the three in question (protip: kyocera grinder = hario grinder, they are literally made in the same factory)

to get a grind from these things that isn't complete dogshit (and without ricing it out with a bunch of frankenstein mods) you just need to grind slowly on a stable surface

this is infuriating and only somewhat effective, the best alternative is just spend the money on a good grinder

to make instant coffee crystals, they take ages old coffee overstock, roast it until it's dark and burnt to even out the taste, then they brew it in huge vats and then quickly freeze-dry the coffee and then smash it with large hammers.

It tastes like shit by itself, so it is usually mixed with mollasses to sweeten the coffee slurry.

If you're drinking decaf, they literally pour dichloromethane and ethyl acetate into the coffee brew to extract the caffeine and then they just skim it off the top, along with the chemicals.
In order to pass FDA standards, there can be no more than 10 parts per million of chemical traces left in the finished product.

Then you just pour the crystals into hot water to reconstitute the coffee, and there you go.

Espresso a best, all else a shit

Here in South Sydney there is a small time coffee joint called White Horse, but they've expanded pretty rapidly in the past year or so. Smooth taste, takes quite a few No-Doz to emulate the caffeine punch - very much my poison of choice

Used to just have one of those shitty Aldi coffee machines but we drink enough of it so we've got a Breville machine at home

40g at a time?? What do you do with it anon, that sounds like an awful lot

I usually rest the grinder on my hip and can go fairly fast, or sitting and with the thing between my legs (as silly as it sounds) and then it goes really fast. In a counter is horribly inefficient imo.

I did French press for a while and still used a lot less than 40g for an entire mug

Anyway, the lido is a very very sturdy machine. They also have more traveling-safe ones if you're worried about the glass jar breaking (the travel ones are made from some pretty good durable plastic). I also think it looks pretty nice too

As for what I do with it, lately I make two aeropress servings, 20g coffee each, and then add one aeropress serving worth of hot water, to fill one mug. I'm too used to drinking ~24oz/~700ml of coffee at a time to make any less, at least for now. If you only drink coffee, go with a drip machine. But if you also drink tea regularly then get a kettle and a French press or Aeropress or something like that. I bought a pour-over thing today because it looked neat and my french press mesh screen stopped working.

I've never used a pour over but I have a general understanding of how it works. Does the water need to be boiling hot for it to work well or can I get away with a pathetic 195 degrees? I have one of those stupid water heaters set to 195 all day for tea and apparently it has some sort of drip function that I might finally get to use.

>>7995462
I suppose that makes sense. I noticed there was a difference between 195 and boiling using my french press. If the little icons on my grinder are any indication I think the pour over uses a finer grind anyway. I guess once it gets delivered to me I'll be able to see just how fine the strainer is.

>> No.7996073

>>7962986
Not at all sold on the freezing beans meme. Hendon and Pergulator pulled the wool over yer eyes m8. As evidenced by SC's experiments with solubility, the fines are not contributing enough to the ext yield to be worth freezing.

Sure, freezing makes your fines a bit more even in their distribution, but it makes the rest of the grind much less even. The rest of the grind is giving you like 70% of the yield. Why fuck up 70% for 30%?

I reckon that your consistency increase is from the routine mastery instead. But either way, if the coffee is good it is pretty hard to screw up the brew. So small changes like freezing will make less diff than a good consistent even routine. It's like going from a k30 to a mythos - you get good shots from both, but if you can chose the k30, why the hell not?

Been trying out some different brew ratios lately, seeing what I can work out for 3.5% and 5% respectively.

5% could be a hard sell in a cafe environment, due to the smallness of the bev.
3.5% is really a happy medium I think. It's about the amount of coffee I like to drink in one go (120g roughly). But maybe still on the small side to have a broad appeal without some acclimation on the customer end of thangs.

I really think that this sort of brew ratio is something that people are asking for without necessarily knowing it. So many want "smooth" or "full bodied" or "strong" or "rich" etc. This gives you that, even from a light roast, and in a way that other ratios don't really give.

Gives me an excuse to use the espresso machine more often as well.

You're right. The bigger versions are good, too. But with the small one, you can have higher quality. On the downside, the small ones are somewhat "bitchy" and while having a good Xpresso on average, getting a great one takes some time because you have to wary in grind and the amount of water and coffee with every other bean you use.

>Why would anyone hate the Nestle corporation?
In short, they are an extremely unethical company, and a popular hate-figure.
Unethical for multiple reasons
• Providing milk powder to mothers in 3rd world countries for free for a month or so; long enough for the breast milk to dry up. Then they stop giving it for free and start charging (A lot, relative to the countries economy). Obviously it's horribly unethical, it's also incredibly similar to how drug dealers supposedly hook kids.
• 'mine water' in the same 3rd world countries, effectively draining out wells in small, poor villages. They then bottle and sell said water around the world, but also to the now waterless villagers.
• Employ 3rd world villagers/effectively slaves/similar Nike style bullshit.
• Lobbied gov't in Canada to give them even more massively reduced costs on mined water (I think it was something like $2 per million gallons)
• The CEO has gone on record as saying he doesn't see water as a human right, and thinks he should be free to sell it to people at whatever price he wants
More than anything it's just that they're a popular hate figure, as I mentioned, Nike does a lot of similar bullshit, and rightly got a lot of flack for it a few years ago.

porlex mini ($50) and an aeropress ($30)
otherwise just make sure it's burr, NOT blade. buying a blade grinder is half-assing it, because you can't control the grind size at all so you're not going to get any consistency which kind of defeats the point of grinding fresh in the first place (ie getting a significant improvement in taste). otherwise just ask the barista to grind your beans for whatever your preferred brew method is when you buy your bag each week. their industrial grinders will be much better quality.

Hmm, well with a moka pot you're not really supposed to get much grounds in the coffee. Maybe you boiled it too hard or long?

Just made my first coffee with the Aeropress. As expected, mum seemed a little skeptical and claimed that it took "too long" and that it was a "hassle". She isn't normally like this but for some reason when it comes to things like coffee or tea she gets a little pissy. In her defense, I messed it up the first time around and forgot to put the damn filter in, had to clean up and start over from the beginning. Won't make that mistake again.
