Yes, of course that's true. My point was that it doesn't really matter what the law says about oaths of office because public opinion will trump that in practice. If it's some minor position nobody will care. But if it's any kind of position that attracts attention Christianity is pretty much a prerequisite.

It goes farther than that as well--I know several professionals (Lawyers, Doctors) who aren't relgious themselves but they take their whole family to church every Sunday because it's basically a business requirement. If word got out that "Dr. So-and-so doesn't go to church" then the old lady gossip mill starts up and before too long he won't have many patients left.

The lawyer is forced to drive an expensive car for the same reason. He doesn't really care about cars and would rather drive an old used car to save money. But nobody wants to hire a lawyer who drives an old car because that generates the appearance of being unsuccessful. That new BMW is essential for getting clients.

And that's kinda the problem I was trying to bring up.

In the case of movies: Don't get the wrong. I don't want my kids watching movies with sex scenes in them. But, if one of my kids was going to be looking at something they weren't supposed to, I'd much rather them be looking at pictures of naked people rather than people killing or being killed.

I'm not talking about comparing one country to another. Please excuse the hyperbole here, but the point I'm making is that throughout most of history you had no chance of being elected unless you were rich, socially connected, followed the major religion of the day, and were male. In the US that meant you were a white male christian. That changed so recently that there are still vestiges of the "old system" in place. Take a look at major government positions: governors, senators, representatives. Though there are exceptions, most of them are still rich white male Christians.

That's not meant as a critiscism of the country--after all, ALL countries have similar problems (if not worse). The point is that the old prejudices still exist, and if you were running for office outside of that stereotype you have an uphill battle. Exceptions exist (as they always do), but empirically it's pretty clear that the trend still holds.

Our technological advances have been massive in that time period.

On the other hand, the length of time required for a new generation to be born has not changed appreciably. Thus old social sterotypes (racism, sexism, and so on) haven't changed fast enough to keep up. We put men on the moon but our political system is still run mostly by rich white Christians.

But it was a US News ranking and the year I got in we were tied for sixth.
