>Should I kill myself?

No, I agree that using tripadvisor is silly, but c'mon anon, all you have to do is stop using it. You don't need to kill yourself to achieve that.

The top rated restaurant here is an Applebee's. My life is going nowhere.

Have you tried moving to somewhere less cringeworthy? I'd try that first.

>My life is going nowhere.

Put your smartphone down. Go talk to some locals and ask where a good place to eat is. If they tell you applebees then just say "nah, we have those where I'm from, I want to go to a local place not a chain" and there you go.

OP isn't looking for suggestions. The fact that a chain has a top ranking on a travel site means they live in a desolate flyover city.

Why is the Midwest so shit food-wise? It's a pity because I really want to visit, the countryside looks quite nice.

Do restaurants that have several locations only inside a 50-mile radius of your state still count as a chain?

If not, then 6/10 of the top places in my city on TripAdvisor are non-chains including #1 (it's a local country buffet cafeteria, think Po'Folks/Cracker Barrel with Barbecue, that's been here for a thousand years).
#2 is Mellow Mushroom which is probably as close to a decent Pizzeria as I'll ever see unless I invest the $90 for a Baking Steel and do it myself.

I've found that tripadvisor ratings are almost exclusively middle aged or older.

I dont know what it is about middle aged people, but their tastes in food is almost always shit.

Go on yelp if you want real food reviews.

>> No.7616367

>>7616334
What happens is that the older people who are competent (including literal computer geniuses, and people who are merely of average intelligence) fly under your radar. They don't write in all caps, or say "Sincerely" at the end of a review, or type today's date into the review text, or any other uniquely "old people" stuff. Naturally, you read their posts in "young people" voice, even though they're not. It's kind of like how everyone posting on 4chan is presumed to be a guy.

TA makes it very easy to write a review. You don't need to register, or deal with emailed links, or do temp passwords, or whatever. These things you find trivial, they consider to be advanced-level computing expert tasks.

As a result, the same people who found registration to be a big obstacle on Yelp, also tend to write in all caps and say stuff like "my grandson" and type the date into a non-date-field. It seems to you that all old people are on TA, whereas it's just the dumb ones who never learned to touch type.

>>7617682

I don't get what the obsession with horsemeat is. They openly sell it as a delicacy in some parts of Europe. Had some horsemeat tartare in Verona that knocked my socks off. As for elk, people eat that all the time. As for pork, inshallah.
