Would you or someone else tell me what some of these dishes are? There are no Russian restaurants to speak of within 90 minutes of me in any direction.

Of most interest are the pasta-like food on the bottom left, the ???bread??? about 1/3 down on the left, and the meat prepared at the bottom right that looks like schwarma. Would love to attempt some Russian cooking this weekend.

The meat is shashlik. It is not really uniquely Russian, it is common all through Eastern Europe and Central Asia. It is not that special, just marinated grilled meat on a skewer, accompanied by lavash bread and grilled vegetables.

As a foreigner living in Moscow, I must say that the traditional Russian food is pretty uninspired. Having also lived in Asian countries, there just isn't a great range of ingredients and flavours used. I guess it is a result of these dishes evolving to suit such a harsh climate and limited growing season.

Spot on mate. Spices don't grow there, most veggies have to be specially bred to grow in cool summers and do on. Yet some delicious food came from the country, if simply because it's large and made up of many different cultures.

The potato salad is called olivier, the beat salad is called vinaigrette.

The little pasta things are pierogi. The buns on the right are usually filled with meat or cabbage or egg, they're called different names but we just call them peroshki. The carrot salad is a carrot salad, I think that one in particular is made with Russian sauerkraut

The long rectangular bread thing is prob a fish pie, or some sort of strudel with Apple.

The red soup is borscht, there is a blini filled with smoked salmon above it and a plate of blini bottom centre.

Those fried things to the right of the cucumbers are chebureki. They're v good. The meat at the bottom is shashlik.

http://natashaskitchen.com Good site to learn Russian staples.

Some other nice staples, not all of this is Russian but it's stuff that my Russian family has been eating for decades

- chicken and beef kotleti - basically soft patties with a meat of your choice, very good if you do it right
- lamb plov - basically buckwheat/rice dish with lamb, very good if you know how to make it
- shuba (fur coat salad) - just google it, IMO it's gross
- vatrushkas (often filled with berries but those are those circular buns on the mid-left of the picture)
- vareniki - like bigger pierogi, we often stuff them with potato or cabbage
- golubtsi - stuffed cabbage rolls (we stuff it with beef)
- solianka - a type of soup, it's made differently but it's either pork or beef, usually spicy, my family makes it with deer meat or rabbit lol
- ukha - a fish soup
- okroshka - a vegetable soup
- syrniki - like cottage cheese pancakes, idk how to describe them but they're good
- Napoleon cake
- koulebiaka - pastry with meat/vege filling

Usually a Russian table will have kapusta and ogurtsy (salted sauerkraut and pickles), as well as other pickled veges. The kapusta is usually prepared really far better than most cabbage is IMO the Russian way. Other snacks include beef tongue and caviar/roe.
