Foods you think are obscure/few people have heard of that's popular in your region?

This is beef on weck, thin cut roast beef cooked rare on a kummelweck roll (this admittedly gross bread roll saturated in salt and given an au jus dip) served with horseradish.

Mostly a WNY thing, has anyone heard of it, or have anything they wanna share?

Almond boneless chicken.

It's basically fried chicken served with almonds and some kinda brown gravy you get at Chinese restaurants, apparently it's regional to Michigan Chinese restaurants, which is a shame cause it's delicious

Eh, besides the rare part and the kimmelweck roll that's pretty damn similar to the standard fare of the American fast food chain Arby's. They even have packets of horseradish sauce and au jus available.

Arby's gets a lot of flak in America for being diarrhea-inducing, but I've personally never had that problem in Arby's is on my top 5 fast foods for sure.

I've seen Faygo down in North Carolina, though you had to hunt for it at this gas station chain called Scheetz which isn't very common in the state.

That Faygo root beer was actually pretty gud, especially considering it was cheaper than dirt.

I would guess a South Philly roast pork sandwich would be obscure to someone who doesn't live in the Northeast. Everyone knows about the cheesesteak, but it's superior porcine cousin rarely is spotted beyond a 100 mile radius of Philly.

The appeal of Faygo for me has always been the "candy" flavors as my friend always called them, redpop, rock n rye, peach, pineapple, cotton candy, candy apple etc etc aren't very common flavors and then their more common flavors like orange and grape are also pretty good compared to competition.

I like their cream soda, but I must admit I prefer other brands for cola and ginger ale, the root beer isn't bad you're right about that, but their "dr faygo" isn't as good as dr pepper

Also, I miss pic related...they stopped making it long ago but growing up this stuff was like crack to me

Even rarer is the Philly roast beef sandwich. Only two places left that serve it after Nick's in Old City closed down.

It looks similar to a standard roast beef sandwich, but the beef itself is roasting with a particular rub of spices I can't quite figure out. I don't know how to make it.

The two places left that serve it are one joint in Nicetown which, despite the name, ain't nice, and a place in South Philly. Since I don't wanna get shot at, I'm not going to Nicetown any time soon.

Top row is chicken long rice, poi (taro, which used to be the staple food), and squid luau.

The two red bowls on the next row I assume are lomi salmon and ahi poke, along with kalua pork and pipikaula (kind of like beef jerky).

Not sure about the one on the bottom, but I'd guess opihi (a kind of shellfish that lives on rocks right at the breakwater).

I would guess Danmark. My family used to go on holiday to Tivoli Gardens from CH when I was a kid and we'd get horse sandwiches there.

In CH, people high up in the mountains make dog ham. It's like regular ham. Only dog. I've never had it nor do I know anyone who has. I'm not actually sure it's really done or if it's just an urban legend.

But again, I've never encountered it myself. The oddest thing I've had, according to the people here on /ck/, is ibex. My dad is half American and he wanted to introduce us and the extended family to Thanksgiving but finding turkey back then was just impossible, so my uncle shot an ibex and we had that.

Apparently they're a particular kind of noodles that are only produced in the Fall River area. But yeah, it's exactly what it looks like: a big plate of food with a little hat. (And the bottom half of the bun underneath.)

You can order it all wrapped up so that the noodles and sauce have time to congeal together into something that's slightly easier to eat as a sandwich. I'd never heard of this before I moved to CT and started reading up on regional dishes. Drove all the way to Fall River to have it. Wasn't impressed, but glad I tried it all the same.
