Are there any particular things that you'll reduce/eliminate your tip for?
>Earlier tonight, go to Chilis with friend because it's all that was open after a concert (That wasn't in the middle of this crime-addled downtown).
>Waitress takes orders
>"Yeah I'd like the signature wings, boneless with the creamy jalepeno sauce. I'd also like a side order of french fries." (Hadn't tried the new wing sauce before)
>"Okay, would you like full orders or a triple dipper?"
>Think she mistook my french fries order for their texas fries, which is a separate appetizer item
>"Nah, just the wings and fries"
>Spend some time still wondering why she asked if I wanted a triple dipper, remember the texas fries aren't part of that.
>She must have thought I ordered two chicken items.
>Check ticket on kiosk, get her attention next time she comes by.
>"Oh, hey. I only wanted the one chicken item; I didn't know you'd taken me down for two"
>"Yeah you ordered the traditional chicken and the jalepeno chicken, that's why I asked"
>"Traditional isn't a type of chicken on the menu. I referred to the menu item called signature chicken that must have the sauce and boneless/bone-in specified. It's one item. Y'know what, doesn't matter. Just one chicken item, please."
>Waitress sighs. "Gotcha"
>Doesn't tend to table beyond bringing the orders out the rest of the time we're there (No refills or anything).

Man I wouldn't have gone to that trouble, I would have refused to pay for the bone-in order when she fucked it up. It was pretty clear what you ordered. If she refused to take it off your ticket then you speak to the manager and he'll take it off for you and she'll get a reprimand. If the manager refuses, tell him he just lost a customer. Any restaurant should REALLY care about service since that IS half their industry.

Things that annoy me:
Walking past my table 4-5 times before acknowledging that you have a new table.
Fucking up my order.
Taking forever to refill my beer.
Attitude. You're here to wait on me- fake it if you have to.
Usually I'm less concerned about time it takes for food to come out, especially when it's busy. I can't fault a waiter/waitress for the kitchen staff.

Has this ever happened to anyone? When a waitress/waiter gets way too comfortable with you right off the bat and thinks it's okay to sit down at your table. Mind you, this only happens at places like Chili's or Applebee's. Also
>squatting download when you're taking our order
Another strange thing some waiters do. I've had waiters pop a squat and rest their forearms on the edge of the table while writing the order on their notepad. I guess they think getting their face on my level while seated is going to make the interaction more personable? Actually
>servers getting too personal in general
We're not friends or even acquaintances. Back the fuck off

>The Server makes any mention of a tip during service

By "bullshit" you mean "I disagree with the system"

I think most people (including most Americans, and in fact including most American waiters) would probably agree with you. Where people start to disagree with you is when you start trying to rationalize being a cheap asshole as "changing the system".

Main things I look for:

>How often do you check on us? If I need something for a solid 10-15 minutes and you do not come by and even check, then that gets taken off.

>How often do you refill my drink? Did I have to squander what little I had throughout the meal? This is a big one for me.

>How long does it take for our meal to get here? I know it isn't always the servers fault, but when I see you chatting with the other staff when my food is clearly in the window, then no. That or when there is next to no-one in the restaurant and you disappear for a long ass time.

>Did we need something for a long ass time, but I saw you flirt/talk with a bigger table because you wanted a bigger tip? Semi-common in our town since there is a military base and the waiters tend to flirt with the soliders.

>Do you disappear half way through our meal? I know your shift may be up, but more then often we are left with no one to wait on us.

>Were you rude and would backtalk when we had a issue with our meal or question about the meal? This is a major pet peeve of mine, and one thing that will quickly make the tip next to zero. Especially if I had to get a manager.

>Was part of our meal wrong, and not because of the kitchen staff? I can forgive a small thing, but a major screwup when it is clear you did not give two shits is a big one. Fortunately this one is fairly rare.

Now, I am a bit lenient when I see it isn't the waiters fault and it is the management/kitchen being shit, especially if you are honest with me and do not try to bullshit. However, if you were extremely bad, I will write a note on the receipt saying what was wrong and why the tip was minimal. It is extremely rare that I do, however.

List is twice as long as it should be. Plus there were a couple of other tipoffs, notably:

and
>The Server does any of the above when I watch them serve other tables

Man that shit is fucking annoying and dumb. If the manager already refuses, then he doesn't give a fuck about you as a customer. Saying "you've lost a customer" only makes you sound like even more of an ass and makes it 10x more likely you won't get what you want.

25%+ : if I don't order a lot of food (like a 5$ dish) but the waiter is still very good and deserves a reasonable tip

20%: good-normal service
15%: minor annoyances like waiting for food or forgetting to bring me something that I ask for
10: bad service- being rude or not doing their job. If I have to wait so long for a drink re-fill that my food gets cold, then you're not doing your job.

5%: awful service. Not bringing me the right food, charging me for something that I didn't order, if my food is fucked up and they won't fix it, etc

-5%: absolutely terrible. I always leave at least 1.00$ because I feel guilty if I don't, but I only do this when I will never come back the service was so bad. I was at CPK the other day and the waiter 1) took forever to take my order and bring me my food (the tester aunt was deserted) 2) brought me the wrong dish 3) charged me for the dish that I hadn't ordered as well as for the dish that I had ordered (even though I sent the first one back without touching it) 4) rang up my bill on my friends card and her bill on my card 5) wrong it up incorrectly AGAIN after we corrected him 6) LITERALLY THIS GUY MESSED UP A THIRD TIME AND THE ORDER IS STILL MIXED UP. 7) at this point we call the manager over and he "fixes it" 8) my friend's order is fixed on her card right away and she is charged for the right amount 9) they fucked up mine though and it was still double charging me 10) manager says "well if the charge doesn't go away in a few days, come back 11) charge is still pending a week later, finally goes through and I literally have to drive all the way back to the CPK to get my refund 12) manager tries to tell me that it's hard for him to do a refund and that he'd need the receipt to do one 13) luckily I had kept my receipt so he couldn't fuck me over 14) begrudgingly gives me my refund.

Literally the worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant, I will never eat at CPK again. But I still tipped the dumbass waiter 1.00$

I usually have a 0-10-30% tip policy. If your service is average and you didn't have to put any more than minimal effort towards serving us, then I'm giving you like 10%. 0% is usually reserved for special circumstances, like if you severely neglect our table.

If you surprise me with your service, I'll tip 30 up to 40%. This only happens if you provide me with extra food for no reason, which has happened before. Thank you based Indian dude for the extra order of naan and garlic sauce. That was so cool of you.

>tipping

I don't tip, ever, and I don't feel bad about it. The things wait staff do (place the orders, carry food/plates to/from table, refill drink) are all things I would happily (and prefer to) do for myself for free, and at my own discretion rather than having an unnecessary, unskilled middleman forced into the equation and rely on their timing.

The idea of percentage-based tipping is especially stupid; two orders involve the exact same amount of effort to bring out to the guest, but one dish is priced three times what the other is. Why should the tip be three times larger on that item for the same work and service by the staff?

>total was maybe $15 and change, hand over $20 knowing they carry change for cash customers

>oi that's not a 25% tip for being late as fuck, give me my change
>looks a bit sheepish and comes back, gives change

I guess you'll be happy to know that I rarely do? I feel like most places are more expensive than they're worth anyway. I go places to try new stuff that I can't be arsed to source and prepare for myself; if anything I'd be inclined to tip the kitchen staff but thankfully they expect to actually be paid by their employer who profits off their work.

I'm not saying other people shouldn't tip if they want to, I'm just saying I think it's stupid and I don't do it.

Ok, but just because you'd do it for free doesn't mean you can just not pay someone for the service they provide??

They don't make 2.13.

They make state minimum wage + tips with a base pay of $2.13 when tips meet or exceed state minimum wage. The difference will always be covered by the employer if they aren't tipped up to minimum wage.

At the restaurant I worked as a waiter at, the building is set up so all waitstaff take the same flow path from the pickup window and back.

So you'll have someone pass your table every 2 or so minutes like clockwork and never have to call for someone. Waiters indicate if they've taken care of a coworker's table by putting a stack of napkins on it.

>> No.7560228

>>7560201
Your argument would hold some merit if I was saying I refuse to pay for the food I order, but that's not what I'm doing. I'm not there for the wait service and I never solicit/ask for it, it's provided by the restaurant whether I want it or not, and the staff are employed by and serve the interests of the restaurant, not me. The waitstaff working on the assumption of charity paying their way is not my problem and foisting such expectation on me is a disservice itself.

If I'm stuck at a traffic light and some homeless guy comes up and starts wiping my windshield with Windex or something I'm going to tell him to fuck off and stop vandalizing my car, not pay him for his undesired, unsolicited "service."
