Thought I'd create a general water thread for some questions I would like answered from users personal experiences.

Is drinking too much water bad for you?

Should you drink tap water (UK), filtered or store bought?

Does the government put stuff in our water?

too much can kill you but you have to really drink a lot. I think UK tap water is fine but I'm not sure I life in the Netherlands and the water in Utrecht is the same they sell internationally as Bar le duc mineral water so the water quality here is fine. Mineral water is always better then filtered water. And if you're picky like me and you can taste the difference you might want to consider mineral water from the somewhat more expensive brands but that does depend on taste of course.

Yes. That's the definition of "too much".

Depends on where you live and the water supply there. I have great tasting clean well water so I drink from the tap mostly, sometimes filtered from the fridge dispenser.

Who the fuck knows what the hell the government really does. There's fluoride in water, and other things too I'm sure. Waste water is also treated to become
Drinking water. Some water in some
Areas is literally undrinkable and dangerous because Of Contamination, heavy metals, sewage, lack of regulation, etc.

Too much of anything can potentially be bad for you. If you chug a gallon of water every 30 minutes, yeah it could kill you.

I'm too broke to replace the $40 pre-filters for my RO system and they've become saturated so I've been drinking tap water. I don't mind it on its own, but my coffee hasn't been as good.

Excess water can bring about electrolyte imbalance, which has its own set of problems. Fluid retention is also possible for those with underlying medical conditions.

Other than that it temporarily fills the stomach, flushes your kidneys, and makes you pee a lot.

Too much water can kill you.

Drinking tap depends on your location. I live in New York City, and we have some of the best tap in the fucking world. So yea, it's fine for me and I grew up drinking tap. I still drink tap all the fucking time.

My government does put stuff in our water, but it's perfectly fine. It's treated with fluoride (proven teeth benefits), chlorine (kill bacteria, the amount isn't enough to have any effect on humans), and orthophosphate to prevent lead from from pipes from contaminating it.

I'm drinking tap right now.

It depends on where you live and where the water that reaches your taps is sourced from.

If you live in a remote area and get your water from a borehole, no, the government doesn't (but there will possibly be fertilizers and other contaminants from local farms and other businesses, as well as natural sources of contaminants).

If you live in a city most of the water that reaches you is probably cycled through from treatment plants. People have shit and piss in it so it has to be cleaned, and funnily enough you can't just rinse it under the tap and call it done, so it gets filtered and bleached to kill microorganisms and prevent the survival of anything that happens to get into the drinking water reservoirs - which is highly effective.

Some areas run fluoridation schemes but you'd need to contact your local water treatment plant to find out if they do it where you are. If you're in Cumbria? I think that's one area that does. Might be Northumbria. The site above has some of the details but the data is badly organised.

All UK tap water is safe to drink unless a warning over quality has been given - those warnings apply only to specific areas and periods, and alternative sources are provided for affected populations for the duration of the contamination. Not all UK tap water tastes great, but taste varies. Filtered water is useful for saving your kettle but not a lot else (though you can essentially piss into those filters and drink what comes out - not that I'm advising you to). Store bought is most likely just tap water from the bottling plant anyway - again, the tap water of certain regions is naturally filtered and requires very little treatment.

All water sources contain mineral salts and this is largely unavoidable, but you can always go to B&Q and buy out all their distilled water if you want to be a twat about purity.

Any other UK lads have hard water? I think it's tasty as shit but it's not as nice to have a shower in. Our kettle also develops an inch of limescale every month so we have to keep scraping it off.

Same, but it does depend on the city. Some cities were shit at managing their water rights and have shitty treatment; most of the eastern suburbs on the Front Range have meh tap water, western suburbs along the foothills have generally decent tap water (although I'm not sure about the newer ones between Boulder and Denver).
