Depends what you like, if you prefer more peaty/smoky it's hard to go wrong with Lagavulin 16 or Laphroiag 10. Some other good scotches in that price range are Glenfiddich 15 and Aberlour A'bunadh. If youre looking for a blend, Johnnie Walker Green Label is excellent.

Recently tried a Japanese whiskey for the first time... Iwai. It was great! Kinda like bourbon with verrrrry slight Scotch-y notes.

On the reg though, I'm not a huge whiskey person. Rum's more my thing. If I'm drinking whiskey though it's probably gonna be Knob Creek single barrel.

Also, Buffalo Trace is the worst bourbon.

I just bought some Springbank 10. It is an odd one for sure, it isn't really super smoky to me, but it is sure earthy, salty, and peaty. Fruity and spicy too. Every glass is different, I have a heard time putting words to the flavors sometimes.

Is sweet something you expect from bourbon? Are they supposed to be that way? I make fun of people who drink sugary shit sometimes. It just doesn't feel right to me. But is that what it's supposed to be? Do I just not like bourbon if I don't like it sweet? WT has grown off me with time. Now it tastes entirely too syrupy and just not okay.

i wanna buy some alcohol tonight, trying to get into drinking a bit. looking for a spirit that can mix well with something non alcoholic. got some rum a few nights ago and about half way through that so gonna give it a little break, maybe get something that can mix with that too even.

been thinking about gin or vodka and buying some mixers to go with them but not sure... what do you guys suggest?

Go to dang murphees and just get a bottle of barcadi or jim beam if ur mixing, it doesnt really matter if you mixing with ice and coke, after one drink it will taste the same.

Speaking of Ardbeg, I picked up a bottle of 10 as my first real foray into Islays. My god, are they ever peaty and smoky. Christ, it was a huge shock after drinking mostly Highlands. I didn't like it at first but it's grown on me a bit. I hear most other Islays are more peaty than this though; not too sure I'll move on from this if that's the case.

Having had plenty of them, I'd say that this is not true. Ardbeg/Laphroaig 10 are about as peaty as you get, older bottlings are in fact less peaty, so things like the ever lauded Lagavulin 16 don't have so much of it. Bruichladdich has a bottling called Octomore which I've heard is stupidly peated, but it is expensive so I have not tried it.

I used to buy yamazaki 12 sometimes, but it was never my thing, more for guests, but its like out of stock everyhwere and doubled in price.
But the rules of supply and demand dont mean the shit is any good, i think a lot of hipster douchebags have memed japanese whiskey hard and now everyone wants it.
I mean yeh they do make good whiskey, but so do a lot of countries that have a lot more available and the prices are remaining decent. Il never understand the mentaility of needing to have the most trendy or hard to obtain whiskey and paying through the nose for it, it seems retarded.

Compared to other whiskeys, yeah, bourbon tends to be sweet. Sugary mixed drinks (like cocktails that use ACTUAL sugar, not spirits distilled in sweet stuff like rum) are shitty and a waste of calories, absolutely. I want to feel that liquor burn.

scotch is... how do i describe it? it's like black licorice is to candy. some people love it, some people absolutely hate it. it's... smoky, maybe? definitely not sweet.

have you ever tasted a bourbon? they are sweet compared to other types of whiskey, but not even as sweet as white rum. it's subtle. i've never tasted an irish or canadian i've actually liked, really, but i haven't had anything fancy.

for bourbon, try knob creek single barrel or, if i remember correctly (tried it once and loved it), angel's envy. for something a bit cheaper, jim beam devil's cut isn't shabby.
