Well, you're right about it being basically chile ketchup, but other than that, why do you care if your friends like it? And, what's wrong with chile ketchup (on certain foods)? That's one reason why sriracha tastes good on burgers and other americana, because it's just like a spicy ketchup, but with no tomatoes.
That said, there are MUCH better asian chile sauces to use than that. But, they're also much hotter than sriracha. I think your friends probably like it because it's tolerable to their palates.
