OP here, I'm trying to post more pics, but am having problems.
The tamales from Houston are exactly how they should be, nice thin, firm masa dough, all meat inside. The SF tamale unrolled like a piece of shit, didn't hold together, and it was like they tried to stuff it with chili or something, and the masa was more like polenta.

Not op but my town is swamped with mexicans, authentic food isn't that hard to find but they americanized stuff is a lot more common as far as restaurants. Just having mexicans around doesn't automatically mean you will get an "authentic" meal like you might in mexico when you walk into a restaurant.

Unrelated, walked into a chinese place the other day and everyone working and eating there was mexican. I should have walked out immediately but tried it anyway.

Worst chinese of my life and it was like $12.50 for one person, fuck that place.

You can't (shouldn't) let one experience from one place dictate your opinion on a food from an entire region.
The tamales I've seen in my area (WA, west/north) are absolutely gross. They take frozen mix veg (carrot, green beans, peas) and husk it with some masa... then the tiniest amount of whatever protein added so that it can be called "pork tamale" or what have you.
These are made by non English speaking people.
A few hundred miles east, like Wenatchee, tamales are bredy gud.

OP here. No, I've eaten tons of great food in SF, and there's probably some good tamales somewhere there too, if I could find them. But this was just a monstrosity. Just shameful.
That said, the best tamales I've ever had in California were from a little hole in the wall outside a flea market in Sacramento. AND, the best tamales I ever had in Texas were made by a mexican family in San Marcos who's dad was a janitor at the outlet mall where I worked when I was in college. (Those are still the tamales of my dreams).

Wenatchee (where I grew up) was full of fruit orchards. And I was told that it was a major stop between Mexico and Canada in the cocaine route.
Lots of dank taco trucks. 1/4 Mexican population at the time, heard it's larger now.
