Friday again, been a long brewday today so why not end it with some beer!

Buying? Brewing? Cellaring? Drinking?

I opened this one up. Might be the first time i am really let down by the brewery. Expected way more coffee than i got.

Cheap and industrial low abv ale, not that big of a selection of those here.

Works alright as an alternative to pissy macro lagers.

Drank some SN oktoberfest yesterday and even though in many ways i liked it i felt the hops might have been a little too strong for me. Thing is im a complete scrub so most craft beers with flavorful hops are a little too much for me, so im just wondering if my reaction with this one is due to just being a scrub bitch or if it actually had pretty strong hops. Sorry for no picture.

The brewery teamed up with a german brewery, Brauhaus Reigele, to make the oktoberfest. The consensus online seems to be that it's good, so if you're interested and Sierra Nevada is available over there it might not be a bad idea to try it since it's American yet German, too.

It was my first Marzen and was expecting more malt but i think its just my over sensitivity to bitterness so far. Wasn't bad though and i still got some left which might turn out better than the first impression idk.

Single hop DIPA? Never tried it but it does sound interesting in that you would really get the profile of the selected hop. I cleaned out all the old bags of leftover hops myself so it ended up being a Mosaic/Centennial/Ahtanum/Simcoe IPA.

Had this one after dinner. Best flavored stout i have tried so far, the regular Yellow belly was great but this one pushes even further, can not stop smelling the darn thing!

>BA takes a sip
>IT DOESN'T TASTE ENOUGH LIKE PUMPKIN, IT NEEDS MORE PUMPKIN, 7/10 THAT'S THE BEST I CAN DO

Definitely not. Compare the difference in taste between Angry Orchard and Redd's Apple Ale. One is crisp, clean, and tart, and the other tastes like Laffy Taffy.

That's a drastic example but it applies to other beers similarly. Abita's harvest ale tastes very similar to DuClaw's Sweet Baby Jesus, despite one supposedly being peanuts and the other being pecans. I suspect they use the same artificial flavoring.

>> No.6984258

Just turned 21 a couple of days ago, what should I drink?

I got some Redd's Wicked because I remembered liking it when I had it at a friend's house. It's good enough, it just feels a little too sweet compared to what I think of when I think of beer (which I really don't know since I'm kind of a beer virgin). I read somewhere that Sam Adams Boston Lager is supposed to be okay so I got a 6 pack of that, but it kind of tastes like skunk ass. If anyone here likes Boston Lager, could you explain why to me so I can understand whether I don't like that one specifically or if I just don't like beer in general? Also, any personal favorites or other reccomendations that I can find at most places (mostly Walmart)?

Thanks guys.

>> No.6984467

>>6984258
Fellow beer noob here. Theres bitterness in beer and that turns off a lot of people, thing is that you got to try to understand why its their (balance out sweetness, give it certain desirable flavors) and as you drink a couple good beers you'll start to notice it. It's not that much of an acquired taste, kind of like mildly spiced wings, you usually get used to it the second time or something. Thing that is recommended is to get lightly bittered beers, so its more like mildly spicey wings rather than some "ebin nuclear wings dude lmao xD®". Sierra nevada is readily available but their pale ale is decently bitter (according to ibu) and their torpedo is quite bitter, and those two are the commonly found ones.

Another important thing to know are the ingrediants, malt and hops, mainly. Malt is the sweet basis for the beer, while hops are like a seasoning which give it bitterness mostly. Both malt and hops can add quite unique flavors and they both have a decent spectrum of variety.

So yeah bruh if you can go to some total wine or some other decent alcohol retailer you should be good. If not a supermarket thats not limited like walmart would be nice too.

>Compare the difference in taste between Angry Orchard and Redd's Apple Ale. One is crisp, clean, and tart, and the other tastes like Laffy Taffy.

Sure, but that has nothing whatsoever to do with "organic" or not. Redd's and Angry Orchard are fundamentally different sorts of beverages. Redd's is similar to traditional alcoholic cider. Angry Orchard and its ilk are more like beers with added fruity apple flavor. Sort of like Mike's Hard Lemonade and similar. They taste different because one of them is fermented from apples while the other is beer with apple flavor added.

I'd recommend you try a dark bock or stout, with a little dark chocolate (not too sweet) to give your mouth a break.

Alcohol is an acquired taste to begin with, and the fermented stuff that accompanies it is also an acquired taste.

You might consider toughing it by letting a shot of vodka sit in your mouth, then spitting it out, and so on until alcohol without any extra flavour stops being outright painful. Then beer will seem like a cold, savoury soup.

I couldn't stand red wine until I alternated sips of it with red meat, and then they balanced each other.

Hmm. I'd suggest their Born Yesterday pale ale once it hits shelves and Sucks (make sure it's fresh), It's not easy to find some brewery's IPAs at their freshest with the current over saturation of readily available highly distributed IPAs. They are a great brewery and they have got to be putting out the most dirt cheap craft beer out there. $4 for a bomber of Hop Stoopid is an incredible deal. $10 for a bomber of a barrel aged imperial stout simply can't be beaten. Is the quality there in comparison with a $30 barrel aged stout? Maybe not, but you at least can start building up a pretty decent cellar without breaking the bank by getting some Lagunitas Gnarlywine, Imp Stout, and high westified.

>>6984776
Not a big blue moon fan, but the best direction you could go in would be exploring more..craft rather than crafty witbiers. I'd personally suggest going for some hefeweizens instead. Should be somewhat familiar territory while having a more strict set of rules on what ingredients are in the beer. From there I'd move into some belgians like Dubbels, Tripels, Quads, Saisons, and definitely their pale ales like Duvel. Be prepared for more flavor and more alcohol though. Blue Moon is pretty much most people's entry level beer and you're likely to never buy the stuff ever again after your palate changes over time.
>>6985509
Yeah, not a fan. I'm not someone who would normally get a black and tan to begin with, but Mississippi Mud is pretty meh even for the money. If you're trying to get a cheap buzz I guess it's an improvement over malt liquor though..
>>6980200
>without alcohol
there's your problem dude. You can taste good and alcoholic beer without getting the effects of alcohol if you just drink a small amount. Quality >quantity as you most likely know. not that guy, but what (cheap) beers would work as a sort of entry level sampler pack? Like, to get a broad idea of what beer's about?

>> No.6987328

>>6987300
Well the good news is that there are beers out there that can have a good chunk of those flavors in them..the bad problem is you can't have the average beer drinker mentality on beer price...because you're gonna have to shell out wine-spirits prices to get all of that. Vanilla flavor can come from bourbon barrels along with some baking spice. Also can alter a more dark chocolatey taste to an almost milk chocolate / chocolate milk taste. There are a handful of stouts out there that use vanilla or vanilla extract as an adjunct as well. Plenty of stouts use oatmeal, lactose, and artisinal cacao nibs. I can't give too many specific examples of good options for you simply because your location matters quite a bit. Stone's Imperial Russian Stout is a solid and usually pretty available option. Their variant on it from this year has Chai Masala tea spices added to it which is pretty awesome if you are a fan of that kind of tea. FiftyFifty brewing (doesn't distro to all states, probably doesn't even send stuff out of the US) has B.A.R.T. vanilla which should be a good option as well.

buy yourself an IPA(ballast point, stone, sierra nevada, etc.), a stout (or porter)...don't go with Guinness for the love of god, an entry level sour (monk cafe, duchesse, petrus pale, cuvee de jacobins), an entry level lambic from Lindemans, sierra nevada barleywine or stone old guardian, and lastly get yourself a belgian of nearly any kind (I'd say a tripel, saison, or dubbel) or a darker german style like a doppelbock. Can't give much more specific options because IDK where you live or what beers are distributed to your area. I promise you that if you try all of the listed beer styles in a blind tasting or even not blind you'll see how beer tasting isn't bullshit at all and how wine tasting is MOSTLY bullshit. IPAs, stouts, and sours are all polar opposites from each other and they all focus on different ingredients that are going in there. IPAs are focused on hops, stouts are focused on the malted barley, and sours are most focused on the yeast+bacteria.

>>6987011
That's fine. I just think for the price point of their offerings they're great. They have a solid pils, fresh Sucks is really good, their pale ale with oats (equinox?) was great. The only thing of theirs I don't care for is their regular ipa.

Currently brewing a Cooper's Stout beer kit. It's already been a week and the gravity has stabilised, so I'll probably bottle it tomorrow or on Tuesday. Based on the samples I've tried, it's not bad at all and it'll only cost me something like 25 pence per pint compared to spending £2.00-£2.50 a bottle for stout in the supermarket.

I got into kit brewing because I've been spending way too much money on beer, but as soon as I acquire enough fund I'll get a 25 litre brew pot and try all-grain brewing. The beer will be better and I should save even more money.

Holy shit, this is one of the best things I have ever tasted. Just the absolute most fruitiest beer I have ever had. Mandarin orange, lemon, mango, guava, passion-fruit, pineapple, mango. plums, raisins, berries. This is like a fruit salad in beer form. And even though it is 13% it is extremely easy to drink.

Prima Pils? Have't had it. It is actually one of their only year round beers I haven't had. Even if I did, I am not a good judge of pilsners/lagers in general. I want to change that though, and I am trying to drink more lagers.

However, I really like Victory. Sure, they have a tendency to, in some people's opinion, "overhop" everything they brew, but I don't think they overhop. There is a definite emphasis on hops, but I don't think it is excessive, and they know their way around them. For instance, Hop Ranch is just one of the absolute best IPAs I have ever had.

They can do more than IPAs though, if you see Moonglow Weizenbock buy it, because it is a perfect fall beer, just as good as any german import.

Only brewery I drink/purchase more beer from is Ommegang.

There has been a lot of discussion about this in the community, and my understanding is that unless you are adding big chunks of fruit or berries, then you are totally fine doing it in primary. Personally I have dry-hopped loads of beers in primary and they turn out delicious.

St Bernardus may be fake trappist, but they make great beer for a more reasonable price. Rochefort 10 is my personal favorite quad, but if I want a quad I usually go for Abt 12 just because it's much more affordable.

I find Gulden Draak 9000 to be incredibly light for a quad. Still good, but not always what I want when I want a quad. You should try the regular Gulden Draak, it might suit your taste better since you seem to prefer darker belgians.

Ha, what'ya know. I found one after all.

Although I'm not exactly sure if I should pop that one open just yet. According to the bottle it's been brewed late September 2015 and the reviews on RateBeer aren't that great. Maybe a couple of months in the cellar might do it good.
OTOH RateBeer says it has 4.5% and mine is from Vinmonopolet and has 6.5%.

Just popped open my first bottle of homebrew. It's actually pretty good and way clearer than I expected. The smell and taste is good. Rather crisp and dry.
Maybe a bit weak. I should really up the gravity for my next batch.

it's great but it's nowhere near the best beer in the world

Had a ginger beer fermenting for about a week, it's wicked easy to make and very tasty.

The first time I made it I just went for the ginger ale, it came out really well.

>infused with ghost peppers
whywhywhy

My only explanation is that the beer ended up with an off taste and they tried to hide it that way.
