I bought a pork butt because it seemed really cheap. $1.19/lb

But I am just learning to cook and have never even handled pork. This huge piece of meat is pretty intimidating. What do I do?

When in doubt, make a roast.

Any low and slow cooking method. You do NOT need to braise and in fact I probably wouldn't.

Best method is to smoke it for about 8 hours and then throw it in the oven at 300F until it's finished and it can be pulled with a fork. I also like inserting a few garlic cloves in the meat and throwing it in the crockpot for 8-12 hours. It's similar to cooking brisket or a beef chuck.

marinate. sear. crock pot for like 8 hours on low, done.

Pulled pork.
Dry rub, in a slow oven for several hours. Shred, mix with bbq sauce.

the cut in your picrelated is not pork butt
regardless
what you do with a pork butt is you give it a dry rub (salt, paprika, cumin, whatever) and stick it in the oven in a deep tray with some vegetables (previously coated lightly in olive oil) on the side
150 Celsius or so until the middle of your piece is at 80 if you're American or 68 if you're Europoor
the end.

Cut it into smaller pieces and deep fry in lard to make carnitas.

How does that work? I thought you were supposed to slow cook the pork in fat like you do when making duck confit, THEN fry it to brown it.

Raise the temp and shorten the cooking time and increase the browning. It's probably much less juicy the way he does it.

Spice rub over night.

Sear ion all sides in dutch oven. Add vegetables (carrots/onions/celery/apples/etc) and some garlic. Add liquid (beer/wine/stock/apple juice). Cover and braise that shit in the oven at 300-325 for a few hours until it's tender and pretty much falling off the bone. Strain and skim the fat from the liquid and make it into a pan sauce/gravy.
