Does anyone have any good tips on using Morels?

A buddy of mine send me a big plastic bag of dried ones he picked while on a hunting trip. I've never eaten them before, so I have no idea how to prepare them or store them.

Eat them on their own? Thrown them into another dish? Just looking for some info.

Try a few on their own. I've heard they taste like fish.

like any delicious shroom, just sautee it in some butter with maybe some onions. eat it on some toast or by itself.

I also forgot to mention that he only sent the dried heads. No stems. I'd also heard that I should be careful of fake morels, because toxicity. Signs to watch out for? I've read about cotton-like balls within the heads and wrinkled appearance instead of honey-comb.

If your ding-a-ling has a honey-combed head, you may want to seek medical attention

The scent oddly does remind me of meat

>>6911475
Definitely gonna try that with a couple of them. Thanks.

What do you think would taste better?

Soak them first and then bread and dredge? Or just fry them dry?

This is how I eat them and god damn they are probably my favorite mushroom when prepared in this fashion

round here we call them dry land fish. nobody even knows what the fuck a morel is if you use that word. cut them laterally and fry in cornmeal like fish

Not a horrible idea honestly. But feels like a waste.

Before we Americans killed almost all of them, my parents and I used to come home with up to two dozen and simply fry them in salt with butter. I doubt my younger brother even remembers it. I wouldn't dare dilute a fresh morel by using it as an ingredient in pasta or rice, or as a topping. Morels are strong, but not as strong as truffles, though seemingly as rare.

Throw your dried in some nice risotto, but do not waste fresh morels. Ever. They're a fine thing.

Strangely enough I'm heading home as we speak. I have every intention of utilizing my mother next season during a mushroom hunt, she can smell morels from a quarter a mile away and I'm not exaggerating.

Bread/fry as mentioned, also try broiling and basting with an herb compound butter

She is though. If someone has experience hunting morels it can seem like they can hone in on them. Mushrooms are very predictable.

Shaved over pasta is the same presentation as truffles though, which is why I suggest it. Using morels in a mix of anything is a waste IMHO.

You've never been on a roadtrip with my mother and watch her pull the car over and go get mushrooms.

It's fucking creepy. She's done this shit in places she's never been before. She isn't hunting, she can tell when they're there.

They're not really rare, it's that they currently aren't cultivated. There are a few groups that are close to commercialization of them, but none currently do, afaik. I guess you can call that "rare", but they are much more plentiful when in season than truffles are.

Morels are great in a sauce over veal scaloppine.

My girlfriend got me a bunch of dried morels.
The first time I tried them was in a sirloin steak, which had like a creamy morel sauce on the side.

I was thinking of recreating that, because it tasted so good. Would sautéing with shallots and butter, season, adding JEM (a powerful firewater), reducing, adding cream and blending it be a good choice for this?

Bear in mind, I have no experience with morels and I want to be super careful with these imported and expensive mushrooms, hence why I'm still doing some research.

This is the only way I've eaten them and I go mushroom hunting damn near every year. They're delicious.

Aren't mushrooms a pain in the ass to cultivate? Since there are so many different conditions for them. Like morels are found near dead elms a lot and stuff so recreating that habitat is a bitch
