Just moved to college and suddenly I have to learn cooking. My cooking skills are practically nonexistent. I can do omelettes and fries but that's all.

I want to invest some time and learn cooking by myself. So could you recommend something for an absolute beginner? Books, youtube channels, websites... any general guidelines are much appreciated

pic ever slightly related

Also, here's the recipe archive..

The 300+ from the challenge tend to be good as well as most recent entries. Old stuff is hit and miss. The old stuff (4 am chili, badly formatted butter chicken, garlic smash chicken sandwiche) gets reposted a lot due to retro-classic nostalgia.

The easiest things for noobs to make is stir fry. Literally chopped up meat and veggies on a pan with oil. You can add curry powder to it to make it more interesting but that's entirely optional. It's actually easier than preparing certain types of pre-made food and it tastes half-good.

this. can't teach you everything. learn the basics, from the internet in general, then pick up tips and experiment. And come here to talk about it.

I suggest trying schnitzel.

1. It's the food of the gods.

2. It's easy.

3. Learning how to bread is going to be tricky at first, but you get really good at it with practice. It sets the course for lots of other cooking techniques that are tricky at first, but you get really good at with practice.

Learn how to butterfly chicken tits. It turns them into what are essentially chicken steaks, which you can marinate or lightly season then fry.

Also, spag bol is an essential. So are toasted cheese sandwiches, basic soups, roasts, and simple salads.

I have the victorinox back at home, highly recommend it for a basic entry knife. (Might as well get the pairing knife while you are at it)

I haven't used any of my roommates knives yet. Don't think the other hones them either, so who knows how nice they are. (They are a set so that's a bad start tbh)

If you add a tin of diced tomatoes you can make autumn soup, swapping the rice for the potatoes.

Best thing I can suggest is learn the basic sauces: Bechamel, tomato and gravy. You can change those up so much to suit what you're cooking, and they are pretty cheap to make.

Throw it in the pan first, brown it, then add the rest of your veggie ingredients. Serve over rice.
