Let's talk about beer

What's your favorite brewery? What beers are you anticipating to get in the near future? Best beer and food pairing you've ever had? Beer infused recipes?

Oskar Blues is good stuff, their Scotch Ale and Dale's Pale Ale are both very good, but I was not a fan of the Ten Fidy. Used to have stacks and stacks of six packs of that at the liquor store I worked at, finally tried it and just wasn't a fan, and I drink a lot of stouts and high percentage craft beers.

Personally, I'd go with Goose Island. Anything with a woman's name on it by them? Buy that shit fucking immediately because it's godly. Sofie, Matilda, Juliet....all god-tier. Sofie in particular. Expensive but so worth it if you appreciate a good beer

My recent kick has been coopers extra stout. I don't know but I haven't fallen in love with beer this hard since I first tasted honey wheat beer. Don't even bother. It's a good DIPA, but it's nothing above most of the newish (less than 2ish years old) DIPA's on the market in any relatively modern city. Check out this list and understand what hype really means when it comes to beer:
http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2015/08/blind-tasting-115-of-the-best-american-dipa-and-im.html

I can't say so in a "blind tasting" sense, but I would definitely rank Myrcenary, Sucks, Double Jack, and Racer 15 above Pliny. The Heady ranking is pretty stunning, as I've loved every can I've had, but I don't know if I could call it better than the 4 I listed.

Also, if you're in a place with Wicked Weed regularly don't take that shit for granted. It's pretty rare to find a region of the US that doesn't have at least 1-2 amazing breweries.

1/2 Acre's Vallejo is what I'm sipping right now.

Real tasty in a fruity way and the aftertaste is leaving a solid fruity dump in my mouth and I can't wait for more.

Listening to blonde redhead while sipping is just making me miss the beaches and cliffs of mendocino right now. Such a pretty town with friendly people. They'd like my hometown brew.

Califags, if you're not living north you're not living nothing. The land out there is to die for and the hiking makes me cum my panties.

If only I could move there and take half acre with me. Our cook (crook) county taxes are practically the same as yours. Let's be friends. Especially now with Lagunitas right here in the city.

Their brewery is the bees knees by the by. Got 3 free "sample" pints last time I went. Gotta love the 'nitas and their strange brewery exclusives.

Helps to have friends working in breweries. Gotta buddy at 1/2 acre who makes sure all the beers we order are in pints until he gets off shift. Good times.

Perhaps the only good comparison you made was Ten Fidy to FIS. The other three are what I'd call average stouts..Ten Fidy and FIS are good stouts.

And saying /ck/ gives an unbiased opinion is painfully retarded if you were being serious and not trolling. First, /ck/ is 3/4 memeposts about everything and anything that is discussed. Second, what "bashing" occurs on the review pages of Ratebeer and BeerAdvocate? None that I've ever seen. Sure, maybe in the forums. But that's not where the reviews are. I see poor reviews for great beers all of the time, and no one ever bothers to disagree with that persons opinion.

When a beer like Ten Fidy has 96-98/100 reviews on both of those sites with somehwere around 7,000 reviews, and then you say it's just average it makes it seem like an obvious troll.

I agree its very balanced, and I'd probably buy some to get drunk on when i go out if it werent so expensive cause it is very easy to drink, but i much prefer a beer like jai alai or some other IPAs that are more fruity.

Although, the fruitiness is present in both if theyre fresh and jai alai gets real nasty real quick if it isn't fresh.

Maybe its just cause I can rarely get any sculpin that's less than 6 weeks old.

Got a can of Ten Fidy sitting in the fridge from last year, probably gonna crack it open tonight after seeing this thread.

My favorite brewery is probably Samuel Smith, I've yet to try anything they've made that I didn't like. They make my favorite porter, my favorite chocolate stout, and my favorite brown ale. Second after them would probably be Founders. Looking forward to finally trying Founders Breakfast Stout, since my local place should be stocking it here soon if they're not already.

Exactly. Buy the cans. They represent the beer the way they should be. I only ever split a six pack with someone to avoid paying 13.50.

But yeah, there's a lot of great new brews that do the fruity business just as well and sometimes balanced isn't what you're looking for.

I made like a gallon of wild blueberry syrup that I'll drizzle into beers or lemonade or whatever. A little bit of that in a sculpin fresh from the can is heavenly. I love blueberries but most blueberry beers straight up suck. Nasty sugar bombs.

Simplest answer is hype. Pliny, Westvleteren XII, and a handful of other beers are still regarded as beers worth seeking out due to limited distribution with high quality control. It's the "it's super highly rated by everyone that tries it and only available in a handful of locations in the entire world" factor. Every single Californian I talk to ends up saying "I'm in the minority when I say this, but I think Blind Pig is superior to Pliny" and I'm someone who holds that same opinion. Most people who try RR's Blind Pig IPA and Row 2 Hill 56 Pale Ale realize how you can make an incredible hoppy beer with tons of flavor without having any hint of alcohol taste. Pliny is a great DIPA, but I pass it up every time I see it. If anyone just getting into craft beer needs or wants some advice just listen up...Don't fly out ANYWHERE in the world just in an attempt to try one fucking beer from one fucking brewery. Don't trade for shit until you realize the price people are paying in that area. Pliny was a $4.50 500ml bottle for a longgg time at my LBS while the brewery sells it for $5... The brewery always has it and many stores get it weekly or biweekly. When some asshole nearby wanted to sell me one can of Heady Topper for $15 I immediately stopped talking to him. The beer community is too large to bother with bad traders or people trying that hard to capitalize. Last tips are..never believe the hype and try to find a local group that does some bottle shares. Chances are people in your area have a good tong time trading partner that is somewhere far away and chances are some people got into beer way before you did and had access to various beers that no longer are released.

Bought two of them when it got here last year (yuroop, late december) had one bottle then and the other one now.

I found out lately that coffee infused stouts really are best fresh and i tend to agree. I remember this one to be sweeter and fuller of the espresso tones with the bottle i had fresh than this one. Back then it was the best stout i ever had, now it´s "just" a 9/10 one.

Fugg,

Still living at home rn but in our basement I use my minifridge from college as my beer fridge.

Yesterday my dad was making chili and needed a dark beer, so he goes and grabs one of mine. The beers I keep in my fridge are almost all imperial stouts with 1 year+ of age on them, and most of them you can't replace if theyre gone, and you cant even get more than one or two bottles whenever they do come out again.

Then ive got some shit I don't care about like a few bottles of left hand milk stout.

My dad, being a fucking idiot and knowijg that Ive been saving soke of tuese beers for multiple years, decides to go down there and take whatever the fuck he sees as soon as I open the fridge.

Luckily all he took was my last 2013 bottle of Founders Imperial Stout and not one of my 2013 BCB bottles, each of which I only have one of.

Least the chili is delicious.

That founders is getting a bit too old anyway m8. I had one with 8 months on it and it was great. The next one was about a year and a few months and it wasnt nearly as tasty. Those bottles don't need too much time. The BC can sit for a long while though

They arent very good, but macro beers are where most people start. I dont think many people go straight to drinking over hopped IPA's or extra dark stouts.

I guess their could an argument for and against starting with macros such as Budweiser or Corona. Some might argue that since they dont taste great, its not good to start with them, and you should just go straight to the nicer craft ales.

Personally, I disagree with that. Several reasons for starting with macros. Typically they dont have such a strong flavour so appeal to more people. They are much cheaper so if you really hate it you wont feel so bad about wasting it. You can also mix them without feeling guilty. Try drinking shandy and slowly reducing the amount of lemonade and increasing beer, or there are a lot of beers out there that have added lemon or lime flavouring.

>> No.6911298

>>6911260
Well breweries often avoid the use of apples or the general flavor of apple as it is commonly associated with acetaldehyde (an off flavor in beer). If you want to get into beer it might make more sense to develop a better taste in ciders first. I don't know what you're drinking as far as ciders go, but there are high quality ciders out there that follow in breweries' footsteps. Barrel aged ciders that aren't overly sweet and they have some wild yeast thrown in there. Troy cider is one of the better ones that seems somewhat easy to find at higher end bottle shops. If you were to try and dive into beer it might make sense to start with some fruited or fruity beers. Belgian quads/dubbels. fruited lambic also could be good. hardcore beer fans will talk smack about the Lindemans lambics, but they're readily available, pretty affordable, and they are really inoffensive.

Lager comes from the type of yeast used to ferment the beer.

So you could take all the malts and shit, and use lager yeast, and it'll be a super dark lager "stout".

Those dark lagers just use a lot of darker/toastier malts, still really smooth like a lager though.

Try a schwarzbier. Perfect campfire beer.

>> No.6911365

>>6911338
This. More people need to git lernt on fermentation and yeast. Lager vs. ale really only means the type of yeast used during the fermentation. Lager = bottom fermenting yeast that prefers colder temperature. Ale = top fermenting yeast that prefers warmer temperature. An interesting hybrid of the two is "Steam" beer or "California Commons" which uses a lager yeast at ale temperatures. If you were to find a beer that was 100% brettanomyces fermentation like Russian River's Sanctification it also technically doesn't fall under the ale or lager category.

>> No.6911373

From their website "100% Brett Fermented
Technically, this is neither an ale nor a lager. The base recipe is for a Golden Ale, but we do the primary fermentation with 100% brettanomyces. The brett gives it some sour notes but not as much as if it had been aged with lacto and pedio. It’s rather refreshing on a warm day!"

I have no idea why no one has given you the real reasons. Their beer isn't able to compete when it comes to quality/price with just about any other craft brewery going right now. Their "popular" beers are beers which beer plebs purchase because they don't know any better. They go for style over substance. Is their voodoo doughnut beer any good? No, but it has a fucking pink bottle and donuts in it so people buy it. Is their sriracha beer good? No, but it has a fucking red bottle + green cap and SRIRACHA IS SO COOL GUIZE JUST LIKE BACON. In addition to those terrible gimmicks they also did a beer with yeast found in one of their lame employee's beard. Rogue is entry level shit and they supposedly treat their employees like shit as well. Why support a gimmicky subpar company? There are over 2000 american breweries to choose from. I'll take a well made AB-InBev owned brewery's beer over a Rogue beer any day.
